Speeding up Windows 10 for free involves a mix of clearing out "digital weight," optimizing how the system handles hardware, and reducing visual lag.
Here is a step-by-step guide to revitalizing your PC performance without spending a dime.
1. Disable "Heavy" Startup Apps
Many programs set themselves to launch the moment you turn on your PC. These run in the background, hogging RAM and CPU.
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.
Click the Startup tab (if you don't see it, click "More details" at the bottom).
Look for apps with a High "Startup impact."
Right-click any app you don't need immediately (e.g., Spotify, Steam, Cortana) and select Disable.
Note: This doesn't uninstall the app; it just prevents it from starting until you manually open it.
2. Change Power Settings to "High Performance"
Windows often limits your processor speed to save battery or electricity. If you are on a desktop or a plugged-in laptop, you should remove these limits.
Open the Start Menu, type Power Plan, and select Choose a power plan.
If you see High Performance, select it.
If you don't see it, click Create a power plan in the left sidebar, choose "High Performance," and give it a name.
3. Disable Visual Animations
Windows 10 uses subtle animations for opening windows and menus. While pretty, these can make an older PC feel "sluggish."
Press Windows Key + R, type sysdm.cpl, and hit Enter.
Go to the Advanced tab.
Under the Performance section, click Settings.
Select the bubble for Adjust for best performance.
(Optional) If you want it to still look decent, check "Show thumbnails instead of icons" and "Smooth edges of screen fonts."
Click Apply.
4. Perform a "System Deep Clean"
The built-in Disk Cleanup tool can remove gigabytes of old update files and temporary data that slow down your drive.
Open the Start Menu, type Disk Cleanup, and open the app.
Select your main drive (usually C:).
Click the button that says Clean up system files (this is the "deep clean" mode).
Check every box in the list, especially Windows Update Cleanup and Temporary files.
Click OK and then Delete Files.
5. Disable Background Apps
Windows allows many "Store Apps" to run in the background to fetch notifications, even when you aren't using them.
Go to Settings > Privacy > Background apps.
Toggle the switch at the top to Off to stop all apps from running in the background, or manually disable specific ones like Maps or News.
6. Advanced Registry Tweak: Menu Speed
If your menus feel like they "lag" when you click them, you can force Windows to display them instantly.
Press Windows Key + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.
Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
In the right pane, find MenuShowDelay.
Double-click it and change the value from 400 to 10.
Restart your computer for this to take effect.
Pro-Tip: Check for Malware
Sometimes a slow PC isn't a settings issue, but a "resource thief." Run a full scan with the built-in Windows Security (formerly Windows Defender) to ensure no hidden miners or adware are running in the background.
