On July 31, 1940, Shaheed Udham Singh was hanged at Pentonville Prison, London. He was 40 years old.

Twenty one years earlier, on April 13, 1919, he had witnessed the Jallianwala Bagh massacre as a young man. Michael O'Dwyer, then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, had sanctioned the order.

British troops opened fire on an unarmed crowd gathered for Baisakhi. Estimates put the dead at over 1,000.

Udham Singh never forgot.

In 1940, he travelled to London and shot O'Dwyer at a public meeting in Caxton Hall. He did not run. He did not resist arrest.

He stood in court and said what he had come to say.

He was tried, convicted, and hanged. He went to the gallows without flinching.

He called himself Ram Mohammad Singh Azad, every faith, one nation, one purpose.

Martyrdom has many faces. His was deliberate, patient, and absolute.

On his Martyrdom Day, we remember not just what he did, but what drove him there.

On July 27, 1953, an armistice was signed at Panmunjom. The guns went quiet after three years, one month, and two days of war.

It was not a victory. It was not a defeat. It was a ceasefire that holds to this day.

Approximately 36,500 Americans were killed. Over 103,000 were wounded. More than 7,000 remain unaccounted for.

They were called the Forgotten War generation. Sandwiched between World War II and Vietnam, Korea was quietly set aside.

The men who served there were not forgotten by each other.

Ceasefire was signed. The debt remains.

On July 26, 1999, India declared victory in Operation Vijay after 60 days of combat in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistani forces and militants had occupied strategic peaks at altitudes above 16,000 feet. Indian soldiers took them back. One by one.

The terrain was against them. The altitude was against them. They went anyway.

527 Indian soldiers were killed. Over 1,300 were wounded. Every peak was reclaimed.

26 years later, those peaks stand under the Tricolour because men chose to climb them when everything said not to.

Kargil Vijay Diwas. We do not forget.

On July 4, 1776, fifty-six men signed a document that had no guarantee of survival.

The nation they were declaring had no army strong enough to defend it, no treasury to fund it, and no allies yet willing to back it. What they had was an argument, that people had the right to govern themselves. That was enough to start.

What followed was eight years of war, a constitution built from scratch, and 250 years of a republic that has been held, fractured, rebuilt, and held again.

250 is not a small number. Most nations do not reach it. Fewer still reach it intact.

Today, the United States turns 250.

The argument those fifty-six men made in Philadelphia still stands. The republic they handed forward still stands.

Happy 250th, America.

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and for 250,000 enslaved people, the war finally ended.

The Emancipation Proclamation had been signed two and a half years earlier. Without Union troops to enforce it, it was just paper.

By 1860, the U.S. Census counted nearly 4 million enslaved people in America. The last of them learned they were free on a June morning in Galveston.

General Order No. 3 read: ‘The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free’.

Eleven words after 246 years.

In some cases, enslavers withheld the news until after harvest season. Even freedom had to wait on someone else's schedule.

Freedmen built the Juneteenth celebration themselves in 1866, before it was recognised by anyone.

It took until 2021, 156 years later, for it to become a federal holiday.

Emancipation wasn't given. It was survived.

The U.S. Army was founded on June 14, 1775, more than a year before the Declaration of Independence. Today it turns 251.

It was born not from a nation, but to build one.

Ten companies of riflemen. No uniforms. No budget. No guarantee they'd win. Just a resolution passed by the Continental Congress and men willing to stand behind it.

251 years later, every war fought, every border held, every disaster responded to, the same oath. The same words. The same standard.

The theme this year, as it was last year: "This We'll Defend". Not a slogan. A fact of record.

Today also marks Flag Day, the anniversary of the flag these soldiers have carried into every conflict since 1777. The same stars and stripes that flew at Normandy, at Inchon, at Fallujah.

251 years. One oath.

On June 6, 1944

156,000 Allied troops crossed 100 miles of open water in the largest seaborne invasion in history.

American forces stormed Utah and Omaha beaches. Omaha alone saw an estimated 2,000-2,500 American casualties in a single morning.

They were mostly 18-22 year old draftees. Many had never left their home state.

The operation involved 5,000 ships, 11,000 aircraft, and coordination across 3 nations, with no GPS, no satellite comms, and no real-time intelligence.

Within 11 months of that morning, N**i Germany surrendered.

Today, 80+ years later, the beaches at Normandy are quiet. That silence is their doing.

No mission briefing prepared them for what they faced. They went anyway.

Every May 1st, the conversation turns to labour rights.

But before we talk about the future of work, let's acknowledge who's holding it together right now.

61.6 crore Indians are employed today.
43% in agriculture.
12% in construction.
12.1% in manufacturing.
The majority of this country's workforce wakes up before sunrise, works outdoors, and carries no formal safety net.

56.2% of India's workforce is self-employed. No guaranteed income. No sick leave. No system catching them if something goes wrong on site.

These aren't just workforce statistics. They're a signal that the systems supporting field workers’ safety, skilling, scheduling, and monitoring are under serious strain.

Technology doesn't replace these workers. But it has a real role to play in making their conditions safer, their output more predictable, and their skills more visible to the organisations that depend on them.

To every worker who shows up before the rest of the world is awake, today is yours.
