Bangalore, the so-called Silicon Valley of India is all set to go offline starting today. That is, if you aren’t able to connect to Internet, do not fret.

BBMP (Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike) is starting a new drive to disconnect unauthorized OFC (optical fibre cables) in the city and the bad news is that of 25,000-km-long optical fibre cables in the city, only 5,000 Km is authorized!ofc_bangalore

“The matter had reached the court after the telecom companies challenged a BBMP decision to levy a monthly fee of Rs 120 per metre of OFC as the telecom companies had used roads, a civic body property, for laying them. BBMP also took steps to disconnect the OFC lines where road cutting charges had not been paid. The telecom companies had allegedly made use of sewage pipelines and overhead electric power wires to lay OFC and avoid paying the road cutting charge.

BBMP is now firm on disconnecting the illegal OFC lines. “We don’t intend to disrupt the OFC network. But they must submit us the details on their entire network in the city. So far, most companies have filed false affidavits. We are authorized to remove the illegal cables. Let them come forward to pay the monthly rent,” said deputy mayor S Harish.”[source: 1, 2]

As part of this drive, BBMP expects minimum of Rs 600 crore revenue from monthly fee.

While operators/ISPs are to be blamed for this situation, isn’t it high time we classify broadband/Internet connectivity as an essential service? Especially when government is stressing on Cloud Computing for SMEs etc?

Two giants of the mobile phone industry, Apple and Google, have agreed to drop all current patent infringement lawsuits between them, they said Friday.

"Apple and Google have also agreed to work together in some areas of patent reform," the companies said in a joint statement. They have not agreed to cross-license each other's patents, however.

Apple's highest-profile battle with Google began in 2010 when it filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Motorola Mobility at the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington. That move sparked a countersuit from Apple, and the battle continued after Google purchased Motorola Mobility.

The deal does not cover the long-running patent infringement battle between Apple and Samsung, which uses Google's Android operating system on its phones. Earlier this month a California jury ruled Samsung should pay Apple $119 million for infringement of several of its patents related to smartphones and tablet PCs.

A notification from the India’s Department of Telecommunications on 18th July 2013 reclassified the term ‘Broadband’ as referring to connections that have the capability of a minimum download speed of 512kbps, the telecom regulator TRAI’s monthly telecom subscribers report mentions, stating that as per the notification:

“Broadband is a data connection that is able to support interactive services including Internet access and has the capability of the minimum download speed of 512 Kbps to an individual subscriber from the point of presence (PoP) of the service provider intending to provide broadband service”.

Accordingly, the TRAI has said that as per its classification, the minimum download speed has been increased from 256 Kbps to 512 Kbps, and from this October 2013 onwards, service providers have to report only those wireline Internet subscribers with at least 512kbps as ‘broadband’.

A leased line is a dedicated communication channel that interconnects two or more sites. This is a service contract between a customer and a provider. It acts as a dedicated tunnel from one point to the other where data can continuously flow for a fixed monthly fee or rent, hence the name. Leased lines are used for Internet, data and even telephone services. They are typically run on fiber optic cables to provide large bandwidth and speed.

Leased lines (such as T1, DS1 lines) are a common Internet access solution for high-speed, guaranteed broadband services for
businesses. Leased lines are defined by a contract and provide a dedicated connection between the ISP and business premises.
They are typically symmetrical lines, meaning the download and upload speeds are the same. Leased lines come with service level
agreements that define performance, reliability and support criteria. Installation cost is based on the equipment needed, location of
the business premises and distance to the nearest ISP access point.
