Constructor in Java 11-18-Sep 2026, Sharda University GN

A constructor in Java is a special method that is used to initialize an object.

Main Points
Constructor name must be the same as the class name.
It has no return type, not even void.
It is automatically called when an object is created.
Constructors are mainly used to initialize instance variables.
A class can have multiple constructors using constructor overloading.
Types of Constructors
Default Constructor
Parameterized Constructor
Copy Constructor (user-defined concept in Java)
1. Default Constructor Program
class Student {
int rollNo;
String name;

// Constructor
Student() {
rollNo = 101;
name = "Lakshman";
}

void display() {
System.out.println("Roll No: " + rollNo);
System.out.println("Name: " + name);
}

public static void main(String[] args) {
Student s1 = new Student();

s1.display();
}
}

Output:

Roll No: 101
Name: Lakshman

Here, Student() is the constructor. It is automatically called when new Student() creates the object.

2. Parameterized Constructor

A parameterized constructor accepts values as arguments.

class Student {
int rollNo;
String name;

// Parameterized Constructor
Student(int r, String n) {
rollNo = r;
name = n;
}

void display() {
System.out.println("Roll No: " + rollNo);
System.out.println("Name: " + name);
}

public static void main(String[] args) {
Student s1 = new Student(101, "Rahul");
Student s2 = new Student(102, "Amit");

s1.display();
s2.display();
}
}

Output:

Roll No: 101
Name: Rahul

Roll No: 102
Name: Amit
Constructor vs Method
Constructor Method
Same name as class Can have any valid name
No return type Has a return type or void
Automatically called when object is created Usually called explicitly
Used mainly for object initialization Used to perform operations
Cannot be inherited Methods can be inherited

Simple formula to remember:

new Student(101, "Rahul") β†’ Constructor is called β†’ Object is initialized.

Syntaxpublic class Main { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("Hello, World!"); }}E...
28/08/2026

Syntax
public class Main {
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println("Hello, World!");
}
}
Explanation of each keyword
public – Makes the method accessible from anywhere so the JVM can call it.
static – Allows the method to be called without creating an object of the class.
void – Indicates that the method does not return any value.
main – The predefined method name recognized by the JVM.
String[] args – An array of command-line arguments passed to the program.
Example with command-line arguments
public class Main {
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println("First argument: " + args[0]);
}
}

If the program is run as:

java Main Java

Output:

First argument: Java
Valid main method signatures

The following are valid entry points:

public static void main(String[] args)

public static void main(String args[])
public static void main(String... args)

Every standalone Java application must have a main() method.
Only one main() method is used as the starting point when the program runs.
A class can have other methods in addition to main().
From Java 21 onward, Java also supports simpler program entry styles for certain cases, but the traditional public static void main(String[] args) remains the standard and most widely used.

System β†’ out β†’ println()
Class Field Method
System.out.println("") in Java
System

This is a final class in the java.lang package.
out

out is a static field of the System class.
Its type is PrintStream.
It represents the standard output stream, which is typically your console/terminal. println()

This is a method of the PrintStream class.
It stands for "print line" β€” it prints the given argument and then moves the cursor to a new line (adds a line terminator, \n or \r\n depending on OS).
Java calls the println(String x) overload with x = "".
