Understanding GROUP BY and HAVING is easier when you remember one simple rule:

👉 GROUP BY = Make groups from similar data
👉 HAVING = Filter those groups based on a condition

For example, if you want to find departments with more than 2 employees, use GROUP BY to create department-wise groups and HAVING to filter the groups.

Best Tip:
🔹 WHERE filters rows before grouping
🔹 HAVING filters groups after grouping
🔹 Use aggregate functions like COUNT(), SUM(), and AVG() with HAVING

📊 SQL Ranking Functions Explained — RANK vs DENSE_RANK vs ROW_NUMBER

Think of it like ranking runners in a race where two people tie for finish time.
The data: Bob and David both earn ₹120000 (a tie). Alice earns ₹95000, Charlie ₹75000, Eve ₹60000.
ROW_NUMBER() — just counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 no matter what. Even though Bob and David are tied, one gets 1 and the other gets 2 (SQL picks an order for you). Use this when you just need a unique number per row, like a serial number.
RANK() — gives tied rows the same number, but then skips ahead like nothing happened.
Bob → 1, David → 1 (tied)
Alice → 3 ← notice it jumped straight to 3, skipping 2, because two people already took "1st place"
Use this when you want real competition-style ranking — like "who's 1, 2, 3" — and gaps are okay.
DENSE_RANK() — same idea as RANK, tied rows share a number, but it does not skip the next number.
Bob → 1, David → 1 (tied)
Alice → 2 ← no gap this time
Use this when you want clean, consecutive rank numbers with no missing steps — like grouping into "salary tiers."
Simple way to remember it:
| Situation | Bob | David | Alice |
|---|---|---|---|
| ROW_NUMBER | 1 | 2 | 3 |
| RANK | 1 | 1 | 3 (skips 2) |
| DENSE_RANK | 1 | 1 | 2 (no skip) |
So: ROW_NUMBER = always unique, RANK = ties allowed + gaps, DENSE_RANK = ties allowed + no gaps.
