Goa

Long before beach shacks, loud music and crowded streets defined Goa’s coastline, the State witnessed a quiet cultural revolution in the early 1970s. Young travellers from Europe, America and Australia — popularly known as hippies — began arriving in Goa, drawn by its serene beaches, relaxed lifestyle and spirit of freedom.

Fleeing war, social rigidity and materialism back home, these visitors found solace in Goa’s open skies and welcoming people. Anjuna, Vagator, Calangute and later Arambol slowly turned into gathering points where life moved at its own pace. Days were spent on the beach, evenings around bonfires, with guitars, conversations and shared meals.

The hippies lived simply. Many stayed in rented Goan houses or temporary beach huts, respecting local customs while embracing Indian philosophy, meditation and music. The famous Anjuna flea market traces its origins to this era, as travellers sold handmade goods to sustain their stay.

For Goa, this period marked the beginning of international tourism. Word spread across continents, turning the once-sleepy coastal villages into global names. Locals recall a largely peaceful coexistence — one based on curiosity, tolerance and mutual respect.

Though the hippie movement eventually faded, its influence remains etched in Goa’s identity. It shaped the State’s image as a land of freedom and laid the foundation for the tourism culture that followed.
