A fool with a tool, is still a fool

In the world of Cyber Security, we go through a number of processes like reconnaissance, network foot-printing, enumeration, mapping, scanning vulnerabilities and so on. Normally, people rely on popular tools for the most common tasks like Nmap for network scanning; BurpSuite, Nessus, Acunetix, HP WebInspect for finding exploits in web applications, etc.

However, we miss the very important point that these tools are static and can only look at things like the way they are been programmed to do. One must not entirely rely on these tools for securing their applications. One must always understand various aspects and scopes of an application and analyze it in many ways to find flaws.

Another problem is that if a tool tells you there's a problem, never fix a bug you don't understand. For example, the Debian folks ran a tool that found a purported problem in OpenSSL; it wasn't really a problem, and their fix actually created a security problem. Cyber security and Information security are more often misunderstood and misinterpreted terms. Although, the word security is common in both (Pun intended!) but the word cyber and information differ in many ways.

The word cyber relates to all the tools and equipment which are used in the digital era and which carry or store data, this involves computers, servers, networking equipment, mobile phones, digital sensors, biometric scanners, etc. Cyber security relates to protection of these devices involved in cyber space.

The word information relates to data which is stored or processed by the devices used in cyber space. Protection of this data (information) is known as Information security.

Wait a minute! When we provide security to the devices used in cyber space, we also indirectly provide security to the data which is stored or processed by them and that's true. Information security can be considered to be a branch of Cyber Security.

Then what's the difference???

Let's clear it with an example, suppose that you have a spreadsheet file on your desktop which contains all of your username and passwords for different social media accounts you own. Now, this file is stored on your desktop so you might deploy firewalls to protect it from network attacks, you might deploy security guards and CCTV cameras to provide physical security to your desktop, you might install antivirus software in your OS. All these measures you took till now are providing security to the spreadsheet file, these measures can be considered to be Cyber Security measures. Now, you set a password to open the file, you use an encryption algorithm to encrypt the content of your file so that if your file is even stolen, the data in it can't be read. All these measures you took now, are protecting the data in your file. These measures can be considered to provide Information security.

Although, in real life there are much more measures which are taken to protect data and IT infrastructure, this example was just to give you a clarification of the difference between these two terms.

While the beginning of Lockdown, most of us had a flashback of our summer vacations of school time.
