Before LinkedIn became LinkedIn, Reid Hoffman had already taken a leap.

In 1997, he co-founded SocialNet, an early social networking platform. The idea was ambitious, but the product tried to do too much. It eventually failed.

Instead of seeing that as the end, Hoffman took the lesson with him: focus on the problem that matters most.

A few years later, he co-founded LinkedIn.

Even LinkedIn didn’t take off instantly. The early platform struggled with growth because people didn’t want to join a network that felt empty. The team had to figure out what was stopping people from coming in, experiment, and change the product. One of the breakthroughs was allowing users to upload their address books and see who they already knew on the platform. That helped change the growth curve.

That’s what makes his famous analogy so powerful:

“An entrepreneur is someone who jumps off a cliff and builds a plane on the way down.”

Because entrepreneurship isn’t about having the entire plane figured out before you jump.

It’s about having the courage to jump, the clarity to learn, and the ability to build before you hit the ground.

A conceptual view of how a business typically moves from launch to maturity and eventual decline or reinvention.

1. START
You have an idea.
Few customers.
High uncertainty.

2. GROW
Demand rises.
Revenue follows.
Everything feels possible.

3. SCALE
Systems become important.
People multiply.
Complexity arrives.

4. MATURITY
Growth slows.
The business becomes predictable.

5. REINVENT.
The curve doesn’t have to go down.
New product.
New market.
New positioning.
New technology.
New business model.

A long-term business will move through all of these stages.

Growth will slow. Markets will shift. New challenges will appear, and some stages will feel harder than others.
The mistake is expecting any one stage to last forever.
It won’t. And that’s okay.
The real journey is to keep moving, adapt to what each stage demands, and not let the uncertainty of one phase overwhelm you.
