Most guides skip the one choice that decides everything. On Meta's "Select the business assets to share" screen, the WhatsApp Business account dropdown offers two options — and the WRONG one is listed first. Pick "Create a WhatsApp Business account" and Meta generates a brand-new VIRTUAL number: your real number stays behind on the app, your contacts and chats don't come with you, and you end up messaging customers from a number they've never seen.

Meta's docs tell you to scan a QR code with the WhatsApp Business App. If you're doing the setup on the same phone, you can't scan a code that's on that phone's own screen. You don't need to — use the access code shown next to the QR instead. That's covered at 2:43 and 3:29.
WHAT IS WHATSAPP COEXISTENCE?
Coexistence lets one phone number run the WhatsApp Business App and the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API) simultaneously. Before it existed, connecting a number to the API deregistered it from the app and you lost your chat history. Now you keep both — reply from your phone as usual, and run bulk campaigns, chatbots, and automations through the API.
