Mumbai’s metro map shows a dozen interchanges. Only one lets you change lines without leaving the station.

At Dahisar East, Lines 2A, 7 and 9 meet at concourse level — you switch inside, no second gate, no second security check.

Everywhere else, the “interchange” is really two stations and a walk. D N Nagar to Andheri West is a pedestrian bridge. WEH to Gundavali is 58 metres over the highway. Marol Naka is one station in the sky and one underground.

The ones that actually work like interchanges? They’re on the suburban railway — Dadar, Kurla, CSMT, Bandra, Andheri, Thane, Wadala Road. Built long before the metro.

One ticket now covers all of it. The walk hasn’t changed.

Chor Bazaar is shut on Fridays. Crawford and Zaveri close on Sundays. Most of us learn this the hard way — after crossing the city.

Mumbai’s markets are specialists, not department stores. Crawford for spices and dry fruit. Zaveri for gold. Mangaldas for fabric. Lohar Chawl for anything electrical. Dadar Flower Market only if you get there at dawn.

Two of these ten don’t run the full festival. Almost nobody finds out until they turn up.

GSB Seva Mandal runs 14–18 September only — five days, not twelve.

Andhericha Raja isn’t immersed on Anant Chaturdashi — its visarjan is five days later. When the rest of the city has gone quiet, it’s still standing.

And if the queue is what’s stopping you: Girgaoncha Raja is reportedly under an hour. Andhericha Raja, one to two.

Somewhere on a Mumbai local right now, a stranger is asking another stranger which station they’re getting off at. No app. No ticket. Nobody enforcing anything. And that seat is now, unquestionably, spoken for.

Eight rules nobody wrote down:
The queue is verbal, not physical — stood for forty minutes without asking? Not your seat. You can book for yourself but never for a friend (your friend is late, that’s your friend’s problem).
The three-seater seats four, always, except in first class. The fourth seat has its own constitution.
Bags go in front. And if you’re getting off at Andheri, a Virar fast is simply not your train.

7.5 million people a day, allocating scarce seats fairly, with zero enforcement. Name another system that works this well.

Registering your rent agreement is the landlord’s legal duty. Not yours.

And under Section 55(2) of the Maharashtra Rent Control Act, if it isn’t registered, your version of the terms — the rent, the deposit, the conditions — is what stands, unless the landlord can prove otherwise.

An unregistered agreement also isn’t admissible in court, and banks and the passport office won’t take it as address proof.

That’s check 2 of 7. The other six are where deposits actually disappear: the inventory clause, the society NOC, the refund timeline, and the difference between lock-in and notice period.

Ganpati Bappa Morya.

In 1892 the British banned public assembly. In 1893 the Ganpati festival went public. Religious gatherings weren’t covered by the ban — so the festival you’ll see on the street this month began, in part, as a way around a law.

It hadn’t always been private. Ganpati was public under the Peshwas, went indoors after 1818, and stayed there for 75 years.
The first sarvajanik idol was installed by Bhausaheb Rangari in his wada in Pune. Tilak saw it, wrote about it in Kesari in 1893, and built it into something an entire province joined.

Mumbai’s first public Ganpati is still running.
Keshavji Naik Chawl in Girgaon — 133rd year, two feet tall, no loudspeakers, the same family making the idol.

This year: 1,885 mandals, 1,136 idol makers, 348 immersion sites, 858 tonnes of shadu clay handed out free.
Every idol under six feet now goes into an artificial pond, per a Bombay High Court direction.

And since July 2025, Ganeshotsav is officially Maharashtra’s state festival.

Mumbai is 2 crore+ people and almost no way to meet any of them.

Mumbai 3.0 already has a name. Almost nobody uses it.

Karnala-Sai-Chirner New Town — named in October 2024 after three of the 124 villages it will absorb. 323.44 sq km across the harbour in Raigad, which makes it almost exactly the size of Navi Mumbai.

Juhu costs about three times Dahisar. Dahisar has three train lines. Juhu has none.

We put twelve Mumbai neighbourhoods’ 2BHK rents against how many rail and metro lines you can actually walk to. Sort by rent, then sort by lines, and the order nearly inverts — every one of the six best-connected rents for less than every one of the five worst-connected.

Powai and Ghatkopar West cost roughly the same. One sits on two lines. The other’s nearest station is a 29-minute walk.

The reason is simple: Mumbai’s rents were set by the sea, not by the trains.

And that’s finally changing — Colaba got its first railway station in October 2025, 172 years after Asia’s first train left Bori Bunder.

Slide 6 is where the money goes furthest. Save that one.

Mumbai doesn’t flood because of rain. It floods when rain and high tide arrive together.

Past 4.5 metres, stormwater can’t drain into the sea. The drains back up.

That’s the whole mechanism — and it’s why 26 July 2005 was catastrophic: 944mm, on a 4.48m tide.

Friday 14 August, 7:36 am. Highest tide left this season, at the exact hour the city leaves for work.
