Blindness and vision impairment is a major public health problem.

Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that 232.5 million people are blind or vision Impaired. 44 million of whom are blind. Over 9 million cases of blindness are caused by cataracts; and another 3 million due to refractive errors; both of which are easily treatable conditions. One person goes blind in the world every five seconds, a child goes blind every minute. (As per WHO report-2002). For many people in the developing world, blindness or Sight impairment means decreased life expectancy and a life of poverty. Women account for approximately 64 per cent of all blind people globally.

An unacceptable figure given that 80% of all blindness and vision impairment is preventable or treatable. meaning 186 million people are needlessly blind or sight impaired.
