Did you know WiFi was introduced in 1997?
WiFi at this time offered max speeds of only 2 Mbps and used technologies so different from later WiFi versions that it’s now considered legacy. Still, it paved the way for newer and better standards.
WiFi 1, more accurately known as 802.11b, was the first to see real mainstream adoption, most notably with Apple’s iBook.
When WiFi 3 arrived, speeds improved to 54 Mbps, allowing devices to connect wirelessly to the rapidly growing internet. However, it still lagged far behind wired Ethernet.
WiFi 5 was revolutionary, delivering a wireless experience that felt much closer to Ethernet, with widespread adoption on the faster but shorter-range 5 GHz band.
With WiFi 7 today, speeds have reached multi-gigabit levels on the wide 6 GHz band, to the point where many users skip Ethernet cabling entirely and rely solely on wireless.
Looking ahead, WiFi 8 is expected to focus less on increasing peak speeds and more on reducing latency, improving stability, and maintaining consistent performance in dense, device-heavy environments.
