Impact of AI on Jobs in India
AI is unlikely to create mass unemployment in India immediately. The bigger change will be that routine work will shrink, job descriptions will change and employees using AI will outperform those who do not.
Jobs facing the highest pressure
Data entry and back-office processing
Basic BPO and customer-support roles
Junior content writing and translation
Routine accounting and invoice processing
Basic software coding, testing and documentation
Recruitment screening and administrative work
Simple graphic design and social-media content creation
Banking operations and insurance-claim processing
Entry-level white-collar employees are particularly vulnerable because AI can perform many of the research, drafting, reporting and documentation tasks traditionally assigned to freshers.
New opportunities
AI will create demand for:
AI and machine-learning engineers
Data engineers and cybersecurity specialists
AI implementation consultants
Cloud and data-centre professionals
AI trainers, evaluators and quality auditors
Hardware, networking and GPU infrastructure specialists
Niti-Ayog estimates India may lose around 1.5 million jobs or create as many as 4 million new opportunities by 2031.
For Indian workers, the safest approach is to combine three strengths:
1.Knowledge of one particular industry
2.Ability to use AI tools effectively
3.Human skills such as judgement, communication, trust and accountability
