Japan has set a new world record for internet speed, achieving 1.02 petabits per second (over 1 million GB/sec) over 1,808 kilometers using a 19-core optical fiber. The fiber is just 0.125mm thick but works like upgrading from a single-lane road to a 19-lane highway.
Developed by Japan's NICT and Sumitomo Electric, the technology is compatible with existing infrastructure, making it practical for real-world deployment to support future Al, VR, and IoT demands that current internet speeds can't handle.
