10 Common IT Job Search Error

1. Making a Job Search Strategy without proper planning - Looking for a new job is a full-time duty. Most people start looking for jobs with no prior preparation. Also, they don’t keep ample time each week or proper expectations with regards to the duration of the entire process.

2. Not Maintaining and Growing Your Network – As per a 2011 survey from Simplyhired.com, over half of number of job seekers are hired via a friend's referral and nearly 70-80 per cent jobs are identified via networking. This means that you must invest time in growing your professional network. People in your network should be aware of your skillset and your value in order to assist you in finding a new job. You need to cultivate and grow these relationships.

3. Throwing a Net that’s too Wide – If you expand the scope of the search in order to get more job options then you are mistaken. As per Van Vreede, "In most cases, that's 100 percent incorrect. What it does in reality is dilute your message on the resume, online profile, etc. and spread your time too thin. You end up chasing things on the fringe that you don't really want and are not a great match for. Defining a narrow scope for the search will help you to create content that truly resonates with your target audience and will aid in saving you lots of time by weeding out unsuitable opportunities."

4. Without Researching Potential Employers – This happens quite a lot. You must research about the company you are interviewing with to gain insight about what they do, who are their customers and the problems they face. This will assist you in coming up with intelligent questions for your interview.

5. Speaking Too Technically – As specific networking or application development skills can make a difference at the outset of your career, the business competencies will set you apart. The more you move up in your ladder the more so. There should be at least one or two stories that you can think of to highlight your achievements.

6. A Lot of Technical Detail in Your Resume - IT pros generally have lengthy resumes. You cannot document many years of experience within the IT field on a single page. As Smith-Proux points out, a resume that exceeds three pages can bore even the most patient recruiter. In case you are struggling to fit your experience into two-three pages, then you must think of looking at resume samples or working with a professional writer for trimming your narrative for readability.

7. Stressing on the Wrong Part of the Story - A hiring manager needs to know about what efforts did you make to help your company succeed and not a long list of duties and responsibilities. When searching for a job and making a resume, job seekers should be meticulous in their descriptions and searches.

8. Utilizing a Work Email Address – When searching for a job while still in employment, you may land yourself in a soup if your boss finds out that you are about to quit. You need to be cautious as potential employer may become suspicious that you are using work time to look for jobs especially if they find out that you may be expecting email messages via your employer's domain.

9. Over-dependence on the Job Boards and Recruiters – According to Burns, the most common issue observed with IT people is an over-dependence on IT methods for connecting with jobs. Job boards are generally inefficient at linking people with jobs. By searching this topic on Google, you will come to know that less than 10 per cent of job seekers connect through job boards, when typical job seekers invest 80 per cent of their time in trying to find jobs in this manner. If you are investing 80 per cent of your time on a strategy which is less than 10 per cent effective has no meaning.

10. Not Keeping A Track – Prior to applying, you must ensure that you have searched in LinkedIn and company About Us pages to locate the most likely hiring manager for the job you desire. In case you are not able to come up with a name then you need to look for contacts within the employer's HR department. You need to follow up with email via LinkedIn to stress your interest and seek for verification that your application has been received.

Ruby on Rails, sometimes known as "RoR" or just "Rails," is an open source framework for Web development in Ruby, an object-oriented programming (OOP) language similar to Perl and Python.

The principle difference between Ruby on Rails and other frameworks for development lies in the speed and ease of use that developers working within the environment enjoy. Changes made to applications are immediately applied, avoiding the time consuming steps normally associated with the web development cycle. According to David Geary, a Java expert, the Ruby-based framework is five to 10 times faster than comparable Java-based frameworks. In a blog posting, Geary predicted that Rails would be widely adopted in the near future.

Rails is made up of several components, beyond Ruby itself, including:

Active record, an object-relational mapping layer
Action pack, a manager of controller and view functions
Action mailer, a handler of email
Action web services
Prototype, an implementer of drag and drop and Ajax functionality

Rails can run on most Web servers that support CGI. The framework also supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, SQL Server, DB2 and Oracle. Rails is also an MVC (model, view, controller) framework where all layers are provided by Rails, as opposed to reliance on other, additional frameworks to achieve full MVC support. Invented by David Heinemeier Hanss, Ruby On Rails has been developed as an open-source project, with distributions available through rubyonrails.org.
