First Made In India Processor ‘AJIT’ Unveiled By IIT Bombay.

been revealed by a team from IIT Bombay. AJIT is the first ever processor to be made from scratch in India. Every phase of the processor’s development, from its design to production, took place in India.

A few months back, India also unveiled its first-ever RISC-V based processor called Shakti. It has a clock speed of around 400Mhz and can boot Linux. Both of these projects have been funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information technology (MeiTY) Government of India.
Made in India Processor Breakthrough
AJIT marks a breakthrough moment in Indian history as the Government of India, Academia and Indian industries came to work together. The birth of AJIT was supervised by Dr. Madhav Desai (Prof IIT Bombay) along with his team of 9 graduate students. Powai labs in Mumbai provided the team with the necessary infrastructure to build India’s first processor.

AJIT is smaller than a desktop Intel processor and can be used as a microcontroller in several electronic devices from satellite dishes to automatic braking systems. The CPU has a clock speed of around 70-120Mhz and it can be mass manufactured for just INR 100 per unit.

Although the specs of AJIT might not seem groundbreaking, the processor represents a massive breakthrough in domestic electronic engineering. Just the fact that India has its own processor to be used in military equipment, nuclear reactors and other areas requiring maximum security, has given the nation a massive edge in every field.

There is no Intel ME backdoor to exploit and the army and other officials know exactly what is within the processor.

The processor also lays the groundwork for several upcoming engineering students who can take advantage of AJIT’s blueprints and learn processor design from scratch.

The Future of Made in India processors:

The team involved in AJIT’s development wants the industry to adopt the processor as an industry standard. Currently, 10% of Indian exports amounts to electronics. This dependency can be reduced using AJIT. Furthermore, the more our Industry adapts this Made in India processor, the more advanced it will become.

Currently, the AJIT’s development team has made the software tools used in its creation public. The team wishes that more people get to learn the ingenuity of Indian engineering thus giving a boost to the Indian electronics manufacturing capability.

AJIT is a tremendous step by a group of extraordinarily talented people, which should be celebrated as such.

New Linux Code To Reduce Transfer Speed Time In FAT Filesystem From 383 To 51 Seconds

Yesterday, Linus Torvalds released the Linux kernel 5.7-rc1 after closing its merge window. But days before that, OGAWA Hirofumi, kernel developer, sent out a patch for improving the speed of file transfer in the FAT filesystem.

The patch code aims to enhance the readahead performance of the FAT filesystem code for Linux. If you don’t know, readahead is a system call of the Linux kernel that prefetches the data and loads it into the page cache. In this way, the file transfer speeds up as the data are read from physical memory rather than from disk.

Linux Kernel Improving The Legacy Code
Earlier, we reported the lining up of improvements in the floppy driver and exFAT (modern replacement of FAT) driver code for Linux kernel 5.7. This time, Linux kernel is adding new and improved code to the old FAT16/FAT32 file system.

Most modern devices support extended FAT(exFAT) but some still use FAT; for instance, digital cameras or EFI partitions. But the current readahead for FAT entries has some flaws that reduce its file-transfer speed.

Hence, the new code makes the FAT readahead size-tunable and updates the readahead window before exhausting it. Moreover, the new changes also avoid small size I/O requests to improve overall file transfer performance.

To prove it practically, Hyeongseok Kim reviewed and tested the patch on a slow USB connected 2TB hard disk drive. And the results showed a decrease in file transfer time from the previous 383.18 seconds to the new 51.03 seconds.

You can check out the patch code found on the mailing list. Though it is too late to include in Linux 5.7, we can hopefully expect it to get pushed into kernel 5.8.

ESXi host Time & date actions menu not working in 7.0 host client – Workaround

This is something I noticed in the vSphere 7.0 host client. The actions button in the host client for the System > Time & date isn’t working. This means that we have to find an alternate method to enable NTP on the stand-alone host.

What we will need to do is the following:

Configure NTP startup policy and NTP server(s)
Enable the NTP port in the Firewall Rules
Start the NTP service manually
Verify NTP is working
1. Configure NTP startup policy and NTP server
To begin, select the correct NTP service startup policy and NTP server from the System > Time & date location. Save those settings.

2. Enable the NTP Port in the host’s firewall rules
To enable the firewall rule for NTP, I usually navigate to Host > Manage > Services view, and locate the NTP service from the list. In the end column, Firewall rules, the name of the NTP rule (ntpClient) is visible. Click on the ntpClient rule to go directly to that firewall rule.

When we get to the Firewall rules, only the NTP client is selected.

Click on the Actions button associated with the NTP Client firewall rule and select Enable.

After the firewall rule has been enabled, we can now enable the service. Let’s do that next.

3. Start the NTP Service
Return to the Services view. Now select the ntpd service, right click and select start.

And now the host will show the the NTP service status as running from the Time & date view.

4. Verify NTP status from the CLI

One final check can be done from the CLI of the ESXi host. You can do this with the ntpq command, as shown below:

[root@esxi-dell-l:~] ntpq -pn
remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter
==============================================================================
*10.84.55.42 10.188.26.21

Now your NTP service is up and running. And yes, we are aware of this issue internally and will be looking to get it addressed asap.
