Google's driverless car: Look ma, no steering wheel. OMG... NO BRAKES

Google is building a driverless car that comes sans steering wheel, accelerator pedal or brake pedal, because - it claims - the vehicles don't need those controls.

Mountain View said it is currently creating prototypes that will work "safely and autonomously without requiring human intervention".

It is so confident about the tech it is testing in the cars that it has ripped out controls familiar to those of you who spend time driving a vehicle.

Google is in the process of building a fleet of 100 prototypes that come loaded with a screen showing the route, a start button and what is basically a holy-sh*t-stop-now panic switch.

The electric-powered automobile, which has its speed capped at 25mph (about 40kmph), is a fat, squat, miserable-looking car. The front design comes with a human-like face with a thousand yard stare and a gritted-teeth grin.

Steely determination, perhaps. But your correspondent can't help but view the entire project as being a little bit sinister.

Here's Google's latest sales pitch about its driverless car project:

We started with the most important thing: safety. They have sensors that remove blind spots, and they can detect objects out to a distance of more than two football fields in all directions, which is especially helpful on busy streets with lots of intersections.

But the experimental vehicles won't be hitting the streets any time soon. Instead, Google said its "safety drivers" would start testing early versions of the cars using - you guessed it - manual controls.

Encrypted Services Developed by US Universities to Protect against NSA

After the American spooks effectively closed Lavabit email service back in 2013, a really secure email system, unhackable by the surveillance agencies, has remained a holy grail for many. Now fresh experts from Harvard and MIT have created a new system dubbed ProtonMail. They claim that their new email service will be even more secure than Lavabit and 100% unhackable by the National Security Agency or other spy agencies.

Lavabit became popular after being promoted by Edward Snowden, who used to leak all the secrets in the world via Lavabit mailbox. However, soon the US authorities put an undue burden on the company and were forcing its founder, Ladar Levison, to hand over the SSL encryption keys. Unlike all other companies who did pass their users’ identities under the government’s request, Levison preferred to refuse and shut down his service. Litigation is still ongoing, where lavabit founder complains that the authorities violate a Fourth Amendment right which prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures.

New service, ProtonMail, is based around using special codes or keys. In fact, such system is known as PGP and has been around for almost twenty years. The problem was that it was too complicated to gain widespread adoption. As for ProtonMail, not only does it offer end-to-end encryption, but is also based in Switzerland. The latter means that the service will not have to comply with US courts’ request to hand over user information. Even if a Swiss court ordered information to be revealed, the email service could only hand over piles of encrypted information because it doesn’t have an encryption key and never sees the user’s password.

ProtonMail launched as a public beta a week ago. Before, it was online for two weeks as an invitation-only private beta. Now anyone is offered to use ProtonMail to a limited extent for free. Harvard and MIT students also add that “power users” will be charged $5 per month to use the service.

According to Jason Stockman, a co-developer of ProtonMail, the service aims to be as user-friendly as the major commercial services, but will differ by its extra security. He explained that multiple users from China, Iran, Russia, and other countries worldwide have already shown in the past months that ProtonMail became an important tool for their freedom of speech. The team of developers is therefore happy to finally be able to provide their services to the whole world.

Apple Delays Fixing iCloud

Some hacker took the advantage of Apple’s delays in fixing its iCloud security flaw. The iPhone-maker has been pushing its security tools enabling to switch off lost or stolen iPhones – Activation Lock was a fail-safe introduced in the latest iOS 7 to keep stolen Apple devices from being usable. The feature was supposed to keep the contents of locked devices unreadable and unable to be erased without knowing the user’s Apple ID and password.

However, vulnerability in Apple’s iCloud meant that intruders could get around Activation Lock with a free tool. Apparently, any security is just token and content can in fact be accessed. In other words, if you have lost your iOS devices, a hacker who is familiar with the problem is able to break into them despite the feature that is designed to protect them.

A hacker nicknamed AquaXetine took to Twitter a few days ago to announce that Apple was “soooooooo toooo late” to address the vulnerability. The hacker who did warn Apple of the security problem allegedly a few months ago cooperated with MerrukTechnolog to create a so-called “first iCloud Activation Bypass”. This is a kind of a “man-in-the-middle attack” that intercepts traffic passing between a device and Apple’s servers. The fix would require a new update issued by Apple to patch it, but that really depended on Apple being on the ball.

Apparently, for Apple to release a patch, it first has to experience an extensional crisis whenever it realizes that its software is not perfect. Only now the company has gotten around to ask the hacker to get in touch. AquaXetine has already released his bypass tool, called DoulCi, and the software remains available for anyone to unlock stolen iPhones. The company hasn’t provided any comments to AquaXetine’s statements thus far.

NASA is gearing up for a 2020 Mars rover mission designed to search for signs of past life, according to a 154-page report released Tuesday.

The unnamed 2020 mission's search for life is the "next logical step" for Martian exploration, NASA said.

The new rover's design will be based on its predecessor, Curiosity, which landed on Mars last summer and is still roaming the planet's surface. During Curiosity's development, doubts were raised about whether it would be possible to land such a sophisticated vehicle there. With those questions answered following Curiosity's success, the 2020 mission will be better equipped to scan Mars for evidence of past life.

Planning for NASA's 2020 Mars rover envisions a basic structure that capitalizes on re-using the design and engineering work done for the NASA rover Curiosity, which landed on Mars in 2012, but with new science instruments selected through competition for accomplishing different science objectives with the 2020 mission. (Image Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech)
Curiosity was built to search for places on Mars that could have sustained life, and the 2020 rover will be tasked with checking those hospitable areas for traces of it.

"Who wouldn't want to search for signs of life on Mars now that from the earlier rovers and orbiters, we know Mars had a past history with lots of liquid water?" asked Jonathan Lunine, Ph.D., director of the Center for Radiophysics and Space Research at Cornell University.

Digging Up and Bagging Rocks

To search for life, the 2020 rover will find, collect and store rock and mineral samples in a hunt for biosignatures -- potential clues within the samples that would indicate the materials could have formed biologically.

As many as 31 rock core and soil samples could be collected and packaged for eventual return to Earth. NASA doesn't yet have a plan in place to get those samples back, but it is designing the system in the hope that one day scientists on Earth will have a chance to examine the materials.

The rover is expected to cost about US$1.5 billion -- about $1 billion less than Curiosity cost. The lower amount is thanks partially to repurposing Curiosity's design plan and even some of its spare parts, chassis and landing system.

Building From Previous Space Successes

Even if the rover's search for past life doesn't yield any results, there is still plenty to learn from the far-off planet, said James R. Webb, Ph.D., professor of physics and director of the SARA Observatory at Florida International University.

"In general, in spite of the amazing success of Curiosity, many questions remain unanswered and much Martian territory remains unexplored," he told TechNewsWorld. "Mars is a very interesting world. The analogy is sending a small robot to the Earth, landing in the middle of the Sahara desert, roving a few square miles, then trying to paint a picture of the history and evolution of the Earth. We are only scratching a small part of the surface of Mars."

That knowledge could help inform and secure future manned missions. However distant a dream those voyages might be, it is still an ultimate goal of most space exploration programs, Cornell's Lunine told TechNewsWorld.

"The more we know about the Martian surface, the safer the surface exploration part of a mission to Mars will be," he pointed out. "Of course, that's a long way off."
