China's nuclear fusion reactor just ran for over 17 minutes.
The system uses a powerful magnetic field to fuse plasma at more than 10 times the temperature of the Sun’s core.
And it just successfully ran for more than 1066 seconds, bringing humanity one step closer to near-limitless clean energy.
The Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) nuclear fusion reactor maintained a steady, highly confined loop of plasma — the high-energy fourth state of matter — for 1,066 seconds.
The move more than doubled its previous record of 403 seconds, Chinese state media reported.
