Google Drive gets Gmail attachment capabilities, Open Doc Format support, and more

Google is on a tear adding new features to Google Drive. The company recently rolled out an improvement to how Gmail handles Drive attachments, as well as some nice feature updates to Drive for Android and iOS.

Two years after Google added the ability to share Drive links via Gmail with just one click, the company is now adding the ability to send actual attachments using the same mechanism. Google's productivity suite also gained the ability to handle Open document formats—ODT, ODS, and ODP—which should come in handy for Linux lovers and users in countries that have adopted Open formats over their proprietary counterparts, like Microsoft's DOCX.

Drive for Android, meanwhile, is getting Google Now integration, which lets you use an "Ok Google" voice command to search for Drive documents. And users of iPhone and iPads are getting the ability to upload content from other apps on their device.

How Facebook Is Going to Battle With YouTube

Facebook is well on its way to developing its next big cash cow, and it has nothing to do with the social network’s splashy billion-dollar purchases of messaging and virtual reality startups.

This year, the company dusted off its oft-neglected video feature and quickly made auto-playing clips ubiquitous in users’ News Feeds. People are now watching videos uploaded directly to Facebook one billion times per day — and that big number is starting to whet marketers’ appetites. As the social network ratchets up its plan to lure brands to place video ads on the site, its efforts could eventually threaten YouTube, which has dominated the online video space for nearly a decade.

Sony Pictures Computers Down for a Second Day After Network Breach

Sony Pictures Entertainment’s computer systems were down for the second day in a row Tuesday after hackers claimed responsibility for breaching the company’s network and defacing its website.

On Monday, Sony Pictures was forced to take its systems offline after its website momentarily displayed an ominous image of a red skeleton that said “Hacked by ” — an abbreviation that reportedly stands for Guardians of Peace. In their message, hackers warned that they had obtained internal corporate data and “top secrets” and threatened to leak them unless their demands were met. It was not clear what the hackers’ requests were.

“We’ve already warned you,” the hackers said in their message. “We continue until our request be met. We’ve obtained all your internal data including your secrets and top secrets. If you don’t obey us, we’ll release data shown below to the world.”

There was not yet evidence that the data had been released.

Sony has attributed the problem to “a system disruption.” The breach did not appear to affect Sony Pictures Animation, Sony Music Entertainment and other parts of the Sony Corporation. But within Sony Pictures, employees were still unable to get access to the company’s internal network Tuesday afternoon.

Emails sent to Sony Pictures employees bounced back on Tuesday. “Our email system is currently experiencing a disruption,” the return message read. “Please contact the person you wish to reach via office or mobile phone. Please do not reply to this email.”

The breach was the second time that Sony Corporation had been targeted by hackers. In 2011, hackers broke into the online network for Sony’s PlayStation game console, exposing names and credit card numbers for millions of customers.

Sony initially estimated the cost of that breach alone would cost $170 million, but that figure did not include the total cost of 50 class-action lawsuits, which sought up to $2 billion in damages.

Karnataka’s M-One Project To Bring Single Mobile App Offering 4281 Govt Services

In a unique initiative, the Karnataka government is all set to bring eGovernance to the fingertips of the people of the state via their mobile phones. The service, which is a brain child of the state Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, was launched on a pilot-test basis last year and will be launched out in its full and final form in the presence of President Pranab Mukherjee in Bengaluru on December 8. Karnataka will thus become the first state in the country to give all its smartphone equipped citizens the option to access and use government services on their handheld devices.

Named M-one, the app aims to provide single point access to all essential services.
The app will integrate 637 G2C (government to citizen) mobile services of various departments and 3,644 B2C (business to consumer) services, thus making it THE largest government platform in the world.

Yahoo to replace Google for search on Firefox

Mozilla Corporation and Yahoo announced a "strategic five-year partnership" agreement today. The deal makes Yahoo the default search experience for Firefox on mobile devices and PCs.

The new deal replaces a longstanding partnership between Mozilla and Google which concludes at the end of this month after 10 years. The most recent three-year renewal of that agreement paid Mozilla $300 million a year, an amount equal to more than 90 percent of the pioneering browser maker's annual revenue.

As part of the pact, the joint announcement says, "Yahoo will introduce an enhanced search experience for U.S. Firefox users which is scheduled to launch in December 2014. It features a clean, modern and immersive design that reflects input from the Mozilla team."

Mozilla published these screenshots of what Firefox users will see if they use the new default search experience:

Facebook Soon launching “Facebook At Work” For Enterprise Usage.

More than 400 million images are shared on Facebook every 24 hours; 48 hours of videos are uploaded every minute which receives 3 billion views on Facebook, every 24 hours.

Of course, productivity is hampered and this is the reason Facebook is not allowed in most of the offices now. But considering that everyone has a smartphone and/or tablet these days, blocking a site is hardly the solution.

Considering these factors, and taking into account that enterprise usage is on the rise, Facebook has decided to launch an entirely new platform: Facebook at Work, exclusive for enterprise usage.

Hence, this platform will enable colleagues to interact with each other, share office documents and files without mixing them with personal photos and posts. Although Facebook group works on the same premise, but the needs for enterprise users are ever expanding.
