Zynga announces new round of job cuts

The ax is falling once again at Zynga.
The social game developer announced Thursday that it was laying off 314 employees, or 15% of its workforce, the latest in a series of job cuts at the company.
Combined with additional cost reduction measures, Zynga (ZNGA) said the move would save it roughly $18 million this year.
Zynga is responsible for popular game franchises like FarmVille, Words With Friends and Zynga Poker. But the company faces a difficult road ahead as it attempts to replicate its early successes.

Zynga said its daily active users plunged more than 50% in the fourth quarter to 27 million, down from 56 million a year prior. The firm lost $20.8 million in the fourth quarter, after earning $6.9 million same period of 2012.
Zynga announced multiple rounds of layoffs last year, and co-founder Mark Pincus stepped down as CEO in July.
"Over the last 7 months, our teams have been working with a sense of urgency," current CEO Don Mattrick said in a statement. "We finished 2013 in a strong position and expect 2014 to be a growth year."
Zynga also announced a $527 million deal Thursday to buy privately-held NaturalMotion, which makes popular mobile games CSR Racing and Clumsy Ninja.
"NaturalMotion possesses industry leading technology and tools ... (that) have powered some of the biggest console games and blockbuster movies," Zynga said.

Microsoft board close to naming Hyderabad-born Satya Nadella as CEO

Microsoft Corp is close to naming a new chief executive, most likely its cloud-computing head Satya Nadella, a source close to the matter said on Thursday, concluding a five-month long search for a heavy-hitter to lead the world's largest software company.

As part of the move, co-founder Bill Gates may step aside as Chairman but remain on the board, while lead independent director John Thompson will take on the Chairman role, the source said on condition of anonymity because the process is private.

Bloomberg first reported the news on Thursday.

Nadella, a native of Hyderabad, India - where Microsoft has its largest non-U.S. research center - was promoted to run the company's fast expanding cloud, or internet-based, computing initiatives in July last year as part of current CEO Steve Ballmer's radical re-organization of the company.

Apple hit by a patent suit over A7 chip
A new lawsuit claims that Apple's latest chip infringes on patented technology developed at the University of Wisconsin.

Apple is no stranger to patent suits, but the latest one alleges legal issues with the brains behind the new iPhone and iPad.
Filed by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) on behalf of the University of Wisconsin, the suit claims that Apple's A7 chip violated its 5,781,752 patent known as "Table based data speculation circuit for parallel processing computer," PatentlyApple reported on Monday.

The future of wearables: 8 predictions from tech leaders
Top executives from ARM, Broadcom, Intel, Freescale, MediaTek, and Qualcomm weigh in on what's ahead for the market.

Wearables: Everybody in the tech world is talking about them, but no one has quite nailed it -- yet.
The category, which includes everything from smart glasses that record video to watches that answer phone calls, is generating some of the biggest buzz in the tech industry, and for good reason. Wearables are a long way from overtaking smartphones, but the market is expected to grow at a fast pace over the next few years.
Perhaps no one has a better view of what's ahead in the wearables market than the companies supplying the critical components. CNET talked with top executives from ARM Holdings, Broadcom, Freescale, Intel, Mediatek, and Qualcomm -- which will supply the brains and wireless chips for these devices -- to find out their views on where wearables are going. Here are some of their thoughts:
