YouTube CEO says NFTs and crypto present a 'previously unimaginable opportunity'

A week after Twitter added support for NFT avatars, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki has said that cryptocurrency and NFTs present a "previously unimaginable opportunity to grow the connection between creators and their fans" on YouTube.

Wojcicki didn't announce any specific plans to add blockchain functionality to YouTube, but calling NFTs an "opportunity" sure makes it sound like the site is working on something. YouTube head of gaming Ryan Wyatt announced today that he's leaving YouTube for a blockchain company, as did senior director of creator partnerships Jamie Byrne (for a different blockchain company), so clearly others at YouTube are interested in cryptocurrency and NFTs. (Except in the extremely unlikely case that the departing Wyatt and Byrne were the only ones aside from Wojcicki who've been sipping on crypto hype.)

"We're always focused on expanding the YouTube ecosystem to help creators capitalize on emerging technologies, including things like NFTs, while continuing to strengthen and enhance the experiences creators and fans have on YouTube," Wojcicki wrote in an open letter about YouTube's 2022 plans. The site will likely elaborate on its blockchain intentions within the year, then.

Shiba Inu Coin has announced its plans to launch its own metaverse project known as the Shiberse.

In a tweet on January 24, the official Twitter account shared further details of its project. We're not sure yet how this relates to the Shiba Inu games, previously codenamed the Oshiverse due to its relation to the Shiboshi NFTs.

According to the official SHIB account, the Shiberse will be: "An immersive experience for our ecosystem and the Metaverse space."

The tweet included an image of a Shiba Inu dog holding a hammer in its mouth in a jungle. On pure speculation, this could suggest the project will include building elements or even Land NFTs, as seen in other Metaverses such as Axie Infinity.

After the announcement, some Shiba Inu holders questioned whether the name was the best choice. "I think ShibaVerse probably would have been a better name though," one user said.

Second Life founder returns to revamp his original metaverse

Philip Rosedale thinks the answer to future shared worlds lies in the game universe he launched in 2003.

The metaverse isn't a new concept. Not only did Neal Stephenson coin the idea in 1992, but some of us were literally living in virtual spaces with virtual currency and virtual storefronts nearly 20 years ago.

The virtual place many people went back then was Second Life. Philip Rosedale, Second Life's founder, has decided to task a core team to work on evolving Second Life now that the metaverse has become a buzzword yet again. His hopes are that developing community-focused worlds like Second Life will solve some metaverse problems that aren't necessarily being solved in VR headsets… yet.

After Second Life, Rosedale became focused on VR technology in 2013, co-founding a company called High Fidelity that promised high-end, low-latency VR. But High Fidelity started to pivot from VR to other technologies over the last few years, focusing on spatial audio most recently. In 2019, Rosedale published a goodbye of sorts to VR, stating that VR hadn't reached a form that was good enough for most people to want to use. Talking with him over Google Meet in 2022, he still feels that way, calling VR headsets a blindfold to the real world that only some people feel comfortable enough to use.

Rosedale thinks VR headsets could hit an iPhone moment, but maybe not for another few years. In the meantime, he's shifting focus to a metaverse platform that doesn't require headsets: namely, Second Life. He isn't the only person to feel this way: Even VR/AR software companies like Spatial have recently pivoted away from VR headsets as a way to reach more people. In many ways, that's already the cross-platform pitch underlying recent metaverse moves from Microsoft and Meta.

Microsoft to acquire Activision Blizzard to bring the joy and community of gaming to everyone, across every device

With three billion people actively playing games today, and fueled by a new generation steeped in the joys of interactive entertainment, gaming is now the largest and fastest-growing form of entertainment. Today, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) announced plans to acquire Activision Blizzard Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), a leader in game development and interactive entertainment content publisher. This acquisition will accelerate the growth in Microsoft’s gaming business across mobile, PC, console and cloud and will provide building blocks for the metaverse.

Microsoft will acquire Activision Blizzard for $95.00 per share, in an all-cash transaction valued at $68.7 billion, inclusive of Activision Blizzard’s net cash. When the transaction closes, Microsoft will become the world’s third-largest gaming company by revenue, behind Tencent and Sony. The planned acquisition includes iconic franchises from the Activision, Blizzard and King studios like “Warcraft,” “Diablo,” “Overwatch,” “Call of Duty” and “Candy Crush,” in addition to global eSports activities through Major League Gaming. The company has studios around the world with nearly 10,000 employees.

Bobby Kotick will continue to serve as CEO of Activision Blizzard, and he and his team will maintain their focus on driving efforts to further strengthen the company’s culture and accelerate business growth. Once the deal closes, the Activision Blizzard business will report to Phil Spencer, CEO, Microsoft Gaming.

“Gaming is the most dynamic and exciting category in entertainment across all platforms today and will play a key role in the development of metaverse platforms,” said Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO, Microsoft.

Nike Buys Virtual Sneaker Maker RTFKT in Metaverse Push.

Nike said on Monday it had bought virtual sneaker company RTFKT for an undisclosed sum, as the sportswear giant looks to quickly expand its footprint in the fast-growing "metaverse".

Last month, Nike became one of the first big brands to enter the shared virtual world that gained prominence after Facebook recently rebranded itself to Meta Platforms. In such blockchain-based environments, users can buy virtual land and other digital assets such as clothing for avatars in the form of a crypto asset called a non-fungible token (NFT).

Formed in 2020 by Benoit Pagotto, Chris Le and Steven Vasilev, RTFKT also makes NFT collectibles and memes, according to its website."This acquisition is another step that accelerates Nike's digital transformation and allows us to serve athletes and creators at the intersection of sport, creativity, gaming and culture," Nike Chief Executive Officer John Donahoe said in a statement.

Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system developed by Roblox Corporation. It completed 15 years successfully.

It allows users to program games and play games created by other users. Created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004 and released in 2006, the platform hosts user-created games of multiple genres coded in the programming language Lua. For most of Roblox's history, it was relatively small, both as a platform and a company, due to both co-founder Baszucki's lack of interest in press coverage and it being "lost among the crowd" in a large number of platforms released around the same time. Roblox began to grow rapidly in the second half of the 2010s, and this growth has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Roblox is free-to-play, with in-game purchases available through a virtual currency called "Robux". As of August 2020, Roblox had over 164 million monthly active users, with it being played by over half of all children aged under 16 in the United States.

Although Roblox has generally received positive reviews from critics, it has faced criticism for its content, chat filtration system, and microtransactions.

India-born Parag Agrawal took over as the chief executive officer of Twitter on Monday as its cofounder Jack Dorsey stepped down after 16 years at the helm of the San Francisco-headquartered microblogging platform.

Agrawal, an IIT-Bombay and Stanford University alumnus, was the chief technology officer of Twitter before the elevation that caught investors by surprise. Twitter stock went up by as much as 10% with the news in opening trade. The two most powerful people at Twitter will now be India-born—the other being Vijaya Gadde, its policy and safety lead director.

Horizon Worlds (formerly Facebook Horizon) is a virtual reality, online video game with an integrated game creation system developed and published by Meta Platforms for Microsoft Windows and Oculus Quest (2). It is currently in an invite-only beta phase.

Each of the worlds we’re looking at today was made entirely inside of Horizon, using only the creation tools and plenty of imagination. Four vastly different worlds, each made by hand, and each a wonderfully immersive reflection of individual aspirations and creativity.

Deep Sleep is an immersive lost in space Sci-Fi thriller game/experience. You play a crew member who has just awoken from hypersleep. With no idea who or where you are, you must restore power to the ship and figure out what went wrong during the voyage.
