The Achan Kovil River flows magnificently down the Western Ghats on its journey towards the Arabian Sea. On its way it takes a short visit to Konni town, famous for its elephant camp. Ayravon is a quiet, somnolent village sprawled on the east bank of the Achan Kovil River. In the midst of this hilly terrain, seeped in rural setting, is situated P.S.V.P.M. Higher Secondary School, exuberating an ex
cellent atmosphere for education. One has no hesitation in saying that the School has been one of the main reasons for the development of the village and the surrounding area. This location was selected by PS Velu Pilla, the Travancore Government Forest Range Officer for his L P School, Ramachandara Vilasam, started with 27 students in 1936. After his death in 1941, the management of the school was taken over by his daughter, Prof. Konniyoor Meenakshi Amma, Professor in Malayalam and Head of the Department at the University of Kerala. She changed the name of the school to P S Velu Pilla Memorial School. Gradually the school grew to become an UP school and then by 1964, was upgraded to a High School. In 1980 the management of the school passed on to Shri K.N.Raghavan Pilla, the son-in-law of Prof. He was the then headmaster of the school also. In the last 25 years, the school expanded and grew to its present glory under his excellent leadership. M.K.Letha the younger daughter of Prof. Meenakshi Amma, became the headmistress of the school. The next ten years, until her untimely death in 1997, saw the golden period in the history of the school, both academically and in cultural activities. She was a true pillar of the school, encouraging the students in studies as well as in arts. A keen dancer and singer herself, she ensured active participation in various competitions, including State Youth Festivals. Under her leadership the school won several prizes and accolades and established itself as one of the best schools in Pathanamthitta District. Her sudden demise in 1997 forced the manager, Mr. K.N.Raghavan Pilla , to devote his full attention to the running of the school. In this he is ably assisted by his son Mr. Aravind and daughter Mrs. Asha Ram Mohan. Today the school is back to its position of glory, excelling in all scholastic activities – studies as well as extra curricular. An English medium nursery and Public School following the ICSE syllabus was started in 1998 by Mrs. Asha Ram Mohan, in memory of her mother, Late Mrs. M K Letha. The students of this school, named as M K Letha Memorial Public School, are receiving all round development at the hands of a team of highly skilled teachers, lead by the Principal Mr. Jayakumar, closely supervised and guided by their Chairperson and mentor, Mrs. In 2004 an unaided Teachers Training Institute, named as Konniyoor Meenakshi Amma Memorial T T I was started in the same campus. This is the only unaided TTI in the whole of Pathanamthitta District. The Institute, under the leadership of its Principal Shri J. Rajan (Retd. from DIET), achieved excellent results in its very first year. For seven decades, members of this family have thus been rendering yeoman service to the society, spreading education to the people living in and around Ayravon village, including several backward villages in the periphery. In fact, you find thousands of old students of this school in several high posts across the world, in the USA, UK and the Gulf countries.
