Google to become a mobile carrier.....

Google has laid the groundwork for its own cellular service by buying capacity on the networks of Sprint and T-Mobile USA, according to news reports.
The sprawling search company would sell the service directly to consumers, according to The Wall Street Journal, which cited unnamed sources.

Google is heavily involved in mobile through its Android operating system, the world's most widely used mobile OS, as well as through selling mobile advertising, and is pushing to make more radio spectrum available for wireless services. But the partnerships with Sprint and T-Mobile would bring the company into the cellular business itself, offering Google phone plans directly to consumers.

The deals would make Google an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), a carrier that doesn't build or operate its own network but sells services that run on the partners' infrastructure. Sprint is the third-largest U.S. mobile carrier and T-Mobile is the fourth largest.

It's not clear whether the company will launch a full-scale national effort or a more limited rollout. There are terms in Google's contract with Sprint that would allow for renegotiation if Google draws a huge number of subscribers.

A Google mobile service might rely partly on cheap or free Wi-Fi networks where available, the Journal said. That's a likely strategy for Google, which has called for making more unlicensed or lightly licensed spectrum available for mobile services. The company has advocated the use of both unlicensed "white spaces" frequencies in the TV band and a band around 3.5GHz that would be shared with the military and other users.

iPhone cameras to soon scan & save credit card information
One of the new features that iOS 8 will bring to iPhones is to scan and save credit card information by simply clicking a photo.

Technology website 9Tto5Mac has discovered this new feature, wherein users simply need to take a photo of their credit card with the iPhone's camera to input the information while making a transaction in Safari browser. Once the picture is taken, Apple's character recognition technology will fill credit card details in the text fields of the website.

The option will pop-up each time a user makes a transaction on an e-commerce website via Safari.
Users will also be able to take the credit card's photo for information and save it for later use. They can simply go to the 'Passwords & Autofill' settings to save the data of a new credit card.

Unlock your Smartphone or iPad with free-form gestures - sweeping fingers in shapes across the screen - to avoid "shoulder surfers"
You may soon be creating your own shapes, which are difficult to imitate, as your unique passwords. With this technology, you can create any shape, using any number of fingers, and in any size or location on the screen

PHP improvements to boost real-world app performance
Developers are tinkering with how the language deals with data structures, data types, and memory allocation

Developers in the PHP community are working on major improvements to the language to dramatically boost real-world application performance. Improvements in a branch of the PHP tree, dubbed phpng, will handle how the language, which is used often in server-side Web development, deals with data structures such as hash tables, as well as data types and memory allocation.
These changes in the lab have resulted in significant decreases in memory usage and the number of machine instructions needed to execute an application. For example, the PHP team ran the WordPress CMS on phpng, and it resulted in a drop from 27 seconds to 18 seconds for 100 requests. The number of machine instructions went from 9.4 billion down to 4.99 billion. One specific change involved separating native types such as integers from complex types like arrays, objects, and strings. PHP thus far has involved a lot of overhead to manage native and complex types. Another improvement to PHP involved re-implementing hash tables -- the foundation for arrays -- to make them significantly more efficient, The team had pondered implementing Just-in-Time compilation, involving compiling at runtime into machine code, theoretically giving native-like performance similar to C and C++. But this only resulted in improvements in benchmarks but not necessarily in applications.

Fitness & Big Data: How Wearable Tech Is Changing Exercise Research

The technology in fitness trackers is changing allowing them to gather detailed information about how people move throughout the day. Wearing an accelerometer-containing device on the waist or the wrist can capture a person's movement throughout an entire day. With the kind of devices we're using now, you're capturing all of their physical activity — all their movement profiles, from all different contexts. Accelerometer data will be particularly useful for studying light activity— like ambling around the office — which is hard to quantify and which people may not always remember doing. The wealth of information detected by today's accelerometers provides researchers the opportunity to study not only exercise, but also sitting, standing and walking, and eventually get a better idea of how these activities affect health.

A recent study by DARPA researchers focuses on something decidedly less high-tech: birds. In an effort to develop new sensor technologies for the U.S. military, researchers from DARPA's Quantum Effects in Biological Environments (QuBE) program recently conducted a study investigating how birds navigate using their internal magnetic compasses. Specifically, these bird-watching scientists, wanted to find out if the electromagnetic noise produced by today's electronics (i.e., cellphones, televisions and radios) interferes with the biological compasses of migratory birds.

Birds that migrate at night, such as the European robin, have an internal magnetic compass that helps them determine where to fly during the spring and fall migration seasons. Scientists have long debated whether the low-level, artificial electric and magnetic fields created by electronic devices affect this avian compass, as well as other biological processes of birds and other animals. Goodman and his team are studying birds to figure out how magnetic navigation works (and what prevents it from working). The findings could lead to new, cutting-edge technologies, such as bio-inspired sensors.

Using JavaScript, We will be able to create games or can draw applications inside HTML5. Using the canvas element we can collect signatures with the mouse. The given image is from a Codepen entry. Somebody had posted a glossy loading circle onto the Dribbble and this pen is a replication using the canvas element. Another example is the small horizontal loading bar built on HTML5 canvas and JavaScript. The possibilities are growing rapidly and within 2-3 years I hope there will be a tremendous development in this.

Apple’s TouchID
The release of the iPhone 5S has, for the first time, made on-the-go fingerprint security a reality. Touch ID, which uses a high-resolution camera to scan your fingerprint, allows convenient ultra-security for your iPhone. Currently, the technology is limited; the only real uses are unlocking your iPhone, and making purchases in the App store. This can be used for other purposes, such as to securely integrate with home security systems, access password software, and even pay for groceries

GOOGLE GLASSES –THE VIRTUAL KEYBOARD

Virtual technology allows you to be available everywhere even without a mobile phone, a tablet, or a computer. The keyboard is constituted by two bracelets which are placed around the wrists or over the hands. Through sensors it feels the position of the fingertips, the surface and the movements of the user and can therefore ascertain which key is touched, while the user can see it for instance in a pair of Google Glasses. The two units will also function as a computer mouse and above all as a unit for gesture input.
