Introducing OpenERP Enterprise App Store
ShareThis !
When you google "Enterprise App Store", you will find plenty of articles on software focused on how to develop a corporate policy around the current Apple or Android apps. This is done in order to constraint employees to use only a set of apps that follow corporate guidelines: security checked, open data, etc.

But we think enterprises need an app store with plenty of apps tailored to their business needs. That's why we are planning to build the OpenERP Enterprise App Store where we will adapt our apps to your requirements .

What makes an Enterprise app store different from a consumer app store?

Enterprise Apps Require Integration: in order to be efficient, all enterprise apps must be integrated. For example, a sales process must be integrated with the billing process which in turn must be integrated with accounting. Naturally, the sales orders could trigger tasks, delivery orders, etc. The purchase process must be integrated with inventory and accounting and so on.

Requires a Global Settings System: Enterprise Apps need more configurations than consumer app store; access rights are critical and business processes differ per company, ...

Integration boosts value: having a full integration of apps can give an exceptional value to every single and simple app. For instance, the best HR Recruitment applications are those having an integrated Document Management System (to store, index and search resumes and cover letters), a mail gateway interface (to process automatically the mails sent to [email protected]), a link with other HR features (employee directory, periodical evaluations, contracts management).

Have a consistent UI: all printed documents should share the same header/footer, you do not want to train all your employees to every single app you deploy. It's important that all the apps you install share the same look, feel and ergonomy to improve the efficiency of the users.

Complexity: Enterprise Apps are more complex than consumer apps as they all require a minimum set of features to be used by companies. To allow third party apps developers to easily release new applications, they should easily reuse core features instead of redeveloping everything from scratch. You can not expect all apps developers to redevelop a workflow editor, a report designer, a web-service API, an access rights system, settings mechanisms, complex drag&drop UI, ...
Requires guarantees on the evolution and maintenance: Entrerprise Apps are often business critical, so they require a reliable maintenance and evolution service. As a consumer, you can probably live with a smartphone application that crashes or stops being maintained, but if your company can not deliver or invoice anymore, it will be a disaster. When your company relies on apps to deliver its business, you absolutely need them to be maintained efficiently in the long term, and properly ported to each new version of the app platform. Every enterprise apps need to be covered by a maintenance contract that covers: evolutions, migrations, bugfixes and even optional support services.
Be Open: every company needs to control their own data and processes as they are part of the their assets/competitivity advantages. That's why an enterprise app store must be open.

Microsoft's Windows 8 to hit release target

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp said on Wednesday its new, touch-friendly Windows 8 operating system will be on sale October 26, almost exactly three years after the launch of Windows 7.

That means customers will be able to upgrade old PCs to the new system on that date, or buy new hardware with the software already installed at stores such as Best Buy.

The company generally does not announce public release dates until close to the event, but has often stated that it aims for a new version of Windows every three years.

Microsoft said earlier this month Windows 8 would be released by the end of October.

OPEN ERP

There are two types of services for Open ERP:
A. Open ERP On Demand: a SaaS offer
B. Integration of Open ERP : customization and implementation service

The first one is dedicated to small enterprises (less than 30 employees). It's a
self-service and low-cost offer with a unique price that includes: the hosting,
maintenance, support, training, Open ERP modules and migrations.

Where as the organization with higher budget and employee strength ranging from
20 to 2000, can choose the second type of service for successful implementation
of Open ERP. Here are few examples of successful implementation of Open ERP in
different verticals:

Government organizations: Financial Administration of Vaud
Educational institutes: ENA (Ecole Nationale d'Administration)
Non profit organizations: Chamber of Commerce of Belgium (CCI)
Manufacturing Industry: Whirlpool
Food and Distribution Industry: Groupe Costes

The latest stable version for Open ERP is 5.0.0 and core of Open ERP uses Python
and PostgreSQL. Open ERP has more than 90 partners spread over 20 + countries.

Apple: Google Warned Samsung Against Copying Us

When Apple’s patent battle with Samsung heads to trial next week, the iPhone maker plans to build its case using its Korean rival’s own words against it. An unredacted version of Apple’s trial brief bluntly states that Samsung was well aware that its smartphones and tablets bore a striking resemblance to Apple’s iPhone and iPad and that the issue was one the company discussed internally.

“Samsung’s documents show the similarity of Samsung’s products is no accident or, as Samsung would have it, a ‘natural evolution,’” Apple argues in its brief. “Rather, it results from Samsung’s deliberate plan to free-ride on the iPhone’s and iPad’s extraordinary success by copying their iconic designs and intuitive user interface. Apple will rely on Samsung’s own documents, which tell an unambiguous story.”

Among those documents are a few purported to show that Samsung not only deliberately copied certain characteristics of the iPhone and iPad, but was also explicitily warned away from doing so by various third parties, including Google. Below, a sampling of some of Apple’s more compelling points excerpted from its brief.

In February 2010, Google told Samsung that Samsung’s “P1” and “P3” tablets (Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Tab 10.1) were “too similar” to the iPad and demanded “distinguishable design vis-à-vis the iPad for the P3.”
In 2011, Samsung’s own Product Design Group noted that it is “regrettable” that the Galaxy S “looks similar” to older iPhone models.
As part of a formal, Samsung-sponsored evaluation, famous designers warned Samsung that the Galaxy S “looked like it copied the iPhone too much,” and that “innovation is needed.” The designers explained that the appearance of the Galaxy S “[c]losely resembles the iPhone shape so as to have no distinguishable elements,” and “[a]ll you have to do is cover up the Samsung logo and it’s difficult to find anything different from the iPhone.”

Damning stuff — as presented in this context, anyway. And it will be interesting to see how Samsung’s legal team rebuts it. That said, Samsung does have some ammunition of its own. Specifically, some 2006 internal design presentations that outline a mobile UI similar to the one that ultimately debuted on the iPhone, a handy before-and-after-the-iPhone-handset comparison and some internal Apple emails that it claims suggest “Apple’s ‘revolutionary’ iPhone design was derived from the designs of a competitor — Sony.”

Add to that Samsung’s claim that Apple’s lawsuit is anticompetitive and its argument that the iPhone maker should pay it for using patented technology, without which it “could not have become a successful participant in the mobile telecommunications industry,” and next week’s trial is shaping up to be a contentious one indeed.
