🌍🌳 Thrilled to announce the launch of “CanopyWatch – Enhancing Deforestation Monitoring and Conservation in the Congo Basin using Machine Learning” an ambitious project set on enhancing deforestation monitoring and conservation efforts in the world’s second-largest tropical rainforest: The Congo Basin!

Home to over 1,000 threatened species and a significant carbon sink, the Congo Basin is witnessing an alarming rate of biodiversity loss and deforestation. Our goal? To provide decision-makers with actionable insights to tackle these critical issues and ensure sustainable development.

In this Omdena - Project Canopy AI Innovation Challenge, the project team will be using cutting-edge AI and Machine Learning to create the next iteration of the Community Deforestation Tracker (CDT), a tool that harnesses satellite imagery to detect various types of deforestation: logging, slash-and-burn, industrial agriculture, and more.

🎯 Key Goals:

✅ Improve the core ML algorithms for deforestation detection.
✅ Incorporate new deforestation types with over 80% precision and recall.
✅ Enhance the cloud-free imagery acquisition process from Sentinel-2.
✅ Develop a pipeline for automating regular imagery pulls and cloud-free image assembly.
✅ Evaluate and possibly replace the current front-end display service.
✅ Integrate radar imagery from Sentinel-1.
