The Hamilton Pulsar P2, originally released in late 1972 / 1973. It is a monumental piece of horological history that pioneered the shift from traditional mechanical gears to solid-state digital electronics.

The First Mass-Produced Digital Watch: While the gold P1 was a highly limited prototype-style release, the P2 was Hamilton's first commercially successful, mass-produced digital watch. It cost $275 at launch—more than a steel Rolex Submariner at the time.

On-Demand LED Display: Because early Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) were incredibly power-hungry, the red screen remained completely blank to save battery life. To check the time, you had to press the prominent command button on the side to illuminate the digits for a few seconds.

Magnetic Time Setting: The watch features no traditional winding crown. Instead, it uses internal magnetic reed switches. The time was adjusted by placing a small magnet (originally stored inside the watchband clasp) against designated spots on the back of the case.

Pop-Culture Icon: Nicknamed the "Astronaut," the P2 became a massive pop-culture status symbol worn by global icons like Elvis Presley, Elton John, Keith Richards, and U.S. President Gerald Ford. It famously gained cinematic legendary status on the wrist of Roger Moore in the opening scene of the 1973.

The Milestone: On September 21, 1983, this device became the world’s first commercial cellular phone to receive FCC approval.

The Legacy: Manufactured by Motorola in the USA, this chunky "brick phone" laid the vital groundwork for the pocket-sized smartphones we rely on today.
