🛡️ Build Your Own Open-Source SOC Stack, Without Spending a Fortune
You don't always need an expensive enterprise security platform to build a capable security monitoring environment.
For a home lab, SMB, or startup, here's an open-source-friendly SOC stack worth exploring:
• SIEM & Endpoint Security - Wazuh
Collect logs, monitor endpoints, detect threats, perform vulnerability assessment, and investigate security events.
• DFIR & Endpoint Visibility - Velociraptor
Great for digital forensics, incident response, endpoint hunting, and collecting forensic evidence.
• Firewall - pfSense
Network firewall, routing, VPN, VLANs, IDS/IPS integrations, and traffic control.
• Network Detection - Suricata / Zeek
Monitor network traffic and detect suspicious activity. Suricata focuses heavily on IDS/IPS and threat detection, while Zeek provides rich network telemetry for investigation.
• Web Application Firewall - SafeLine
Protect web applications from common attacks such as SQL injection, XSS, malicious requests, and other application-layer threats.
• Threat Intelligence - MISP / OpenCTI
Correlate indicators of compromise (IOCs), threat intelligence, campaigns, and adversary information.
• Cloud & DDoS Protection - Cloudflare
Add DNS, CDN, WAF, rate limiting, and DDoS protection in front of internet-facing applications.
• Case Management/Response - TheHive
Useful for turning alerts into structured investigations and incident-response cases.
How the pieces fit together:
Internet > Cloudflare > SafeLine > pfSense > Network/Endpoints
Then:
Endpoints > Wazuh + Velociraptor
Network Traffic > Suricata / Zeek
Alerts & IOCs > Wazuh + Threat Intelligence > Investigation > TheHive
The goal isn't to deploy every tool.
The goal is to build a security architecture where you can:
Detect > Investigate > Respond > Learn
💡 For a beginner: Start with Wazuh + pfSense.
💡 For a homelab: Add Suricata/Zeek + Velociraptor.
💡 For an SMB/startup: Add Cloudflare + SafeLine + threat intelligence + case management based on your actual requirements.
Important: Open source doesn't mean zero cost. You'll still need hardware/cloud resources, configuration, maintenance, monitoring, backups, and security expertise.
