A year ago, we launched CoDevs – our online learning platform. Last year's Vijayadasami, we started accepting enrolments. The initial response was better than expected. We had a flurry of signups.

Then, there was good news and bad news.

The bad news was that less than 20% of students completed the first task, and less than 10% completed the second task. However, the good news was those who went past the first two tasks completed the course. Over the past six months, we observed and listened to students to better understand and fix the problem. We restructured the course content and tasks without diluting the goals.

Last month, we started beta testing the Markdown (v2) course. The results have been encouraging. Please note that the course was active only for a week. During the week,

About 80% of students completed 40% of the tasks.
About 50% of students completed 50% of the tasks.
About 12% of students completed the course.

Today, on the occasion of Vijayadasami, we are making the new markdown course available for everyone. This course is FREE now and for the foreseeable future.

Follow up on my previous post:

At CoDevs, we encourage students to adopt the learn-in-public approach. We designed the tasks to let the students spend 30 minutes daily learning something new, validate their understanding with a co-developer and share their journey with the world. That's why we provide a blogging space for every student who completes the Markdown course. (Yes, the blogging space supports only the markdown syntax).

In a few hours, through seven tasks, a student went from zero to customising her profile page on GitHub and published a blog post about it. She also received a digital completion certificate for this achievement.

We organized a one-day CoDevs workshop for the students of the MCA department at Ethiraj College for Women on Thursday, 19 Sept 2024.

We set the students a simple objective – learn markdown and turn their GitHub profile page into an online resume.

They started by enrolling in the markdown course at CoDevs.in. The course has a series of tasks (seven, to be precise) to help them learn the markdown syntax and its supported features, the different flavours and linting tools.

Despite having a slow start in the morning due to bad network conditions, within five hours, two students completed all the tasks in the course, while two others were progressing on the final task by the end of the day.
