iPhone 6: Is Apple delaying India launch?

NEW DELHI: After surprising everyone by mentioning the iPhone 6's availability date on its official India website, Apple has taken a step back and removed it.

While Apple did not announce the timeframe for availability of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in India during the iPhone launch event, it announced September 26 as the availability date for the two new phones on its website shortly after the event. A few hours later, the Cupertino giant changed the date to October 17. A day later, it has removed the date, disappointing potential consumers who're eagerly waiting for the new phones.

It is possible that Apple removed the launch date after anticipating supply delays for one or both the new iPhone models. Preorders for the phone start September 12 in markets like US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and UK, with availability staring September 19. The company would want to ensure there are sufficient stocks to satisfy consumers in its key markets, before taking the new iPhone to other countries.

Last year, Apple received flak for limited availability of the new gold-coloured iPhone 5S during the initial sales period. Media reports had indicated that supplies of the larger, 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus could be limited due to component shortages and display issues.

It is interesting to note that unlike previous launch events, Apple did not go into specifics of the iPhone's launch in different markets. Instead, it just gave a wider 'end of the year' release timeline giving itself enough buffer to satisfy demand for an eagerly-anticipated iPhone model. The larger screens, make the new iPhone a major upgrade despite the phone being an evolutionary upgrade.

Apple had also listed September 26 as the iPhone 6's availability date on its China website. However, it removed the date, later. According to Chinese media the reason for the delay was Apple not receiving a routine certification from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), which inspects new smartphones before they are allowed on Chinese networks. It could be possible that supply constraints are also a reason for the delay. Reuters cited a China Mobile sales representative as saying employees had received a staff-wide notice saying the iPhone 6 will begin shipping at the end of 2014.

Apple had released the iPhone 5S and 5C in China in the first phase and had stressed that it was a key market for them. It is unlikely that it will launch the phone in India before making it available in China.

Having said that, Apple typically makes the iPhone available in India around Diwali. If it follows the same pattern, it could still launch the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus around October 23.

Just to recap, the two iPhone models take Apple to the big-screen smartphone segment, sporting 4.7- and 5.5-inch screens respectively. The iPhone 6's 4.7-inch display sports a resolution of 1334x750p, while the iPhone 6 Plus' 5.5-inch display sports a resolution of 1920x1080p. iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are the thinnest ever Apple has ever made. iPhone 5S and 5 are 7.6mm thick, but iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are even thinner at 6.8mm and 7.1mm respectively.

Powered by the new A8 processor, iPhone 6 is up to 50% more energy efficient, so you can have higher sustained performance, claimed Apple. The 64-bit CPU architecture-based A8 processor is 20% faster in application processing and 50% faster in rendering graphics compared to its predecessor. It is able to sustain performance-intensive tasks like playing a game at higher frame rates.

The two iPhone 6 models sport an 8MP iSight camera that features phase detection. Despite no increase in camera resolution, iPhone 6 takes 43MP panorama photos.

China busts iPhone 6 smugglers gang

BEIJING: China in recent days has busted a slew of smugglers bringing Apple iPhone 6 models into the country ahead of their official release here. State media on Sunday announced the latest seizure of 453 smartphones in Shanghai.

The official Xinhua News Agency says hundreds more were seized during three separate busts, Thursday through Saturday in Hong Kong, including from men with a speedboat who were loading contraband onto a wooden sampan-style boat in a mangrove.

Xinhua says the latest seizure was from the luggage of two passengers arriving at the Shanghai airport from Tokyo, one of them Chinese and one of them Japanese.

Nearly 700 more of the phones have been confiscated individually from passengers who did not declare them.

Yahoo to shut down its keystone service 'Yahoo Directory'

WASHINGTON: Yahoo has announced that it is shutting down Yahoo Directory, Yahoo Education which is a portal for education services, and Qwiki, an app for creating short movies from videos on a mobile device.

But the real significance, if only sentimentally, is the shutting down of Yahoo's Directory which was once the cornerstone of the company, CNET reported.

The service, lists popular sites by category, instead of surfacing search results by keyword, like search engines such as Google allow.

Even before the formation of the company, co-founders Jerry Yang and David Filo created the directory in 1994, calling it 'Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web.'

The directory will officially close December 31, and advertisers will be given details on getting upgraded to a new service.

BANGALORE: While it took Google over a year to build its augmented-reality goggles, Google Glass, Kochi-based Arvind Sanjeev says he was able to replicate it in less than a month for just Rs 4,500, thanks to open-source hardware. Instead of commercializing the product and with the intention of contributing to the community, Sanjeev posted a blog explaining how his 'Smart Cap' can be built by anyone using open-source hardware such as a Rasberry Pi computer, an Arduino board and Android software. Open-source hardware platforms such as these and RepRap 3D printers are enabling students, engineers and entrepreneurs
to start building hardware products with little to no knowledge of electronics. "Before I got introduced to Arduino in college, I had no idea how a calculator works or how I could build one," confessed Sanjeev, 23, who couldn't learn anything about building computer hardware at his engineering college and decided to make all his projects available for anyone to replicate. He's developed a
platform that he says can take over your car. "With the help of open-source hardware, I have been able to build a platform wherein you could control the entire car, including its ignition through just a
mobile app." Sanjeev has already applied for a patent for the platform and expects to sell it for Rs 9,000 apiece. Mumbai-based Shreekant Farasbee, who has built a medical device to track glucose levels of diabetes patients, also used the Arduino computer board to create his prototype and is planning to contribute back to the open-source hardware community by making his Diabeto open source.
"Open-source hardware lets you cut down on your prototyping and design time significantly and the vast community support helps you at every stage," said Farasbee, whose device has received interest from global pharmaceutical companies. Looking at the growing demand for its boards in India, Arduino opened its first India office in Bangalore last year. "We are seeing explosive growth for our business in India. We are talking to local companies here to start
manufacturing our boards in India within the next couple of months," said Priya Kuber, managing director of Arduino in Bangalore. With local production, Kuber expects the prices to go down to Rs 900 from Rs 1,200. Using RepRap, another open-source hardware toolkit, many Indian startups have already been able to build 3D printers, which are being sold commercially. "We used RepRap and Arduino as a platform to build our own 3D printer," said Nikhil Velpanur,
co-founder of Bangalore-based Brahma3. "It is only a matter of time that open-source hardware will become a part of school and college curricula," said S Sadagopan, professor at IIIT
(International Institute of Information Technology), Bangalore. "The cost of IP ( intellectual property) makes hardware expensive. Open-source hardware eliminates that cost, making electronic hardware very accessible." The move has already begun. The Kerala government has already decided to hand out 10,000 Rasberry Pi computers to school students. Some entrepreneurs are building their own open-source hardware to promote hardware product creation in
India. Meerut-based Electrobricks is one such example. The company sells the basic kit for Rs 2,000, which kids and enthusiasts can use to create various hardware products.
