Raspberry Pi miniaturized computer available for pre-order

Raspberry Pi, a single board computer is now available for pre-order on the element14 site. It is a credit card-sized computer, that can be connected to a TV and lets you connect generic USB mouse, keyboard and even a monitor. The mini computer has been developed to improve the programming skills of children and has been selling since the day of its launch. It is capable of many tasks your PC does, such as spreadsheets, word-processing and also games. It can also handle high-definition videos. The computer is designed around a Broadcom BCM2835 SoC and includes ARM1176JZF-S 700 MHz processor, VideoCore IV GPU, and 128 or 256 MB of RAM. Interestingly, for booting it relies on an SD card and doesn’t require an HDD or SSD and runs on Linux kernel operating system.

Two versions of the computer will be released dubbed Model A and Model B. The former will equip 128 MB RAM, one USB port and no Ethernet, while the latter will be integrated with 256MB RAM, two USB ports and a 10/100 Ethernet controller. Model A doesn’t feature an RJ45 Ethernet port, but can be connected to the network using the supplied USB Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter. Generic keyboards and mice will also be compatible with the computer. Debian GNU/Linux, Iceweasel, Calligra Suite and Python are expected to be bundled with the Raspberry Pi. It isn't accompanied by a real-time clock, so the OS uses a network time server, or can ask the user for time information at boot time to get access to time and date info for file time and date stamping. This doesn’t mean that a real time clock (such as the DS1307) with battery backup cannot be added.

It is available for pre-order on the element14 website and is priced at Rs.2,350. Those who have pre-ordered the device will receive an e-mail about the delivery time and other details, while others can pen down their interests on the site and Raspberry will let you know when the units are available. The Model B Bundle with mouse, keyboard, Wi-Fi dongle, SD card reader and other accessories, likewise Plus Bundle and Accessory Pack will be made available soon.

Download Windows 8 Consumer Preview now!
MWC 2012 has come to a close, but the real fun has only just begun. Besides waiting anxiously for the new handsets to arrive, Microsoft has a little treat for everyone, as they’ve launched the public Beta of the next version of Windows. Windows 8 Consumer Preview is now ready for download, so go ahead and grab the download links from below:

* Download Windows 8 Consumer Preview Setup
(http://view.atdmt.com/action/FY12_WinCon_Windows8Preview_DLButtonTag?href=http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=242045)
* Download Windows 8 Consumer Preview ISO (32-bit - 2.5GB, 64-bit - 3.3GB)

Try it now!
Try it now!

Microsoft is offering two ways to get Windows 8 running on your PC. The first link will download a 5 MB setup file that will check and see if your current PC meets the minimum requirements and then, automatically download the correct version (32-bit or 64-bit). You can also choose to create an ISO file from these files or simply download the ISO directly, if you want to install this on another partition on your PC. Windows 8 is designed to be lighter on system resources, so if you’re running Windows 7 just fine on your PC, then chances are that Windows 8 should be smooth sailing as well. In any case, here are the system requirements for Windows 8 Consumer Preview:

* Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster

* RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

* Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

* Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device or higher

* To use touch, you need a tablet or monitor that supports multitouch

* To access Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768

* To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1366 x 768

If you’re thinking of upgrading your current Windows installation, rather than a fresh install, then you can opt for this. However, you won’t be able to keep all your settings from the previous OS. For instance, if you’re on Windows 7, then you can keep installed programs, Windows settings and User accounts and files. If you’re upgrading from Vista, then you can only keep Windows settings and User accounts and files and finally from XP, you can only keep the latter. Microsoft will be launching Windows 8 for ARM devices as well, later on, but for now, this preview is only meant for x86-based devices, or to put it simply, devices that use either Intel or AMD CPUs. Do not attempt to install this on ARM-based tablets (not that you’ll be able to). This will work on Windows-based tablets and touchscreen PCs, so if you have one of them then you’ll be able to make better use of the Metro UI.

So, what are you waiting for, go ahead and grab your copy of Windows 8 Consumer Preview and let us know what you think.

[Microsoft demonstrates Windows 8]

Microsoft demonstrated the next generation of Windows at the D9 conference today. Codenamed Windows 8, it sports a totally redesigned interface featuring tiles, similar to Microsoft Windows Phone 7.

Windows 8-based PCs will be able to scale from touch-only small screens through to large screens, with or without a keyboard and mouse.

Microsoft also announced that all Windows 7 applications and programs will be supported in the new touch-enabled version of Windows and users will be able to seamlessly switch between these apps.

They also demonstrated for the first time a fully touch-enabled Internet Explorer 10.

No specific launch date has been announced.
