:::Hiring in startups: 8 common mistakes:::

Here they are:

1) Hiring under duress: Never hire when you are under pressure of time or because you are not finding the right candidate. Hiring under pressure might result in hiring the wrong person, and that means not getting the job done. Expect more delays then because you will have to go through the messy job of firing the person and then spend time trying to hire a new candidate.

2) Never hire a professional as the first salesperson: A startup requires somebody who has the passion and belief in the products sold. A seasoned professional may not exactly work out because he comes with preconceived notions. Focus on hiring somebody who may not have extensive sales experience but might yield better results because he is fresh and willing to put in those long hours needed to succeed.

3) Hiring process: How does one determine which candidate to hire? Take the person out for dinner or for a round of golf. Get the candidate drunk, how does he behave when he’s a little inebriated? Does he cheat at golf? All of these reveal how the person is going to pan out in the long run.

4) Waiting long to fire: So you’ve hired your dream candidate and you had high hopes on the outcome, but the candidate comes out a cropper. What do you do? Wait patiently for the turnaround that never comes or fire the person saying sorry this dint work out. Taking too long to ask somebody to leave when you are convinced this is not working is a recipe for disaster. Don’t get emotions get in your way. Let the person go, think of it a bad investment and then move on.

5) Not writing a clear job description: Not writing a clear job description may mean that you have recruiters calling and asking if an NIIT pass-out will do or only IIT will pass muster. Not clear about who you want to hire will result in hiring the wrong person. Spend time on writing the job description and you will get the right person.

6) Hiring too early: Never ever hire too early. This will mean that high quality talent will end up on the bench. Timing is of the essence when it comes to recruitment. After the founding team comes together take some time for them to bond and then make the rest of the hires. Hiring too many early on may also result in a disjointed team that does not perform at a 100 percent.

7) Pedigree or personality: On one hand you have a graduate from IIT and then you have a personality on fire from a tier two or three college. Who do you choose? There is no right answer. This might depend on the job requirement. Go with your gut feel. Will this person be around when s**t hits the ceiling? You want somebody who’s there during your toughest times.

8) Save on money: Sometimes you need spend money to hire the right candidate. Flying a potential hire in, splurging on dinner and drinks are all common procedures when it comes to ensuring the correct hire is made. Be frugal, but don’t get cheap. Spend peanuts and all you will get are monkey.
