Google started its SMS service today!!

Google has extended its free SMS chat service to India, whereby users can send text messages to mobile phones via Gmail Chat. The SMS service is available in India and 51 other countries in Asia, Africa and North America. The feature is activated today for Indian users and is available for regular Gmail users as well as those on Google Apps. This feature is available on all the mobile operators in the country. Google initially provides free SMS credit of 50 messages for each user. For every message sent, users' credit would decrease by one. However, this credit would increase by five every time a user responds to the text message by sending a return message. In case, the SMS credit limit slashes down to zero, one credit would increase automatically after 24 hours. Users can also 'buy' SMS credit in case of shortage by sending a text message to their own phone and then by replying to that message. There is a facility for those users do not wish to receive any messages on SMS from any Gmail user.

India to build world’s fastest Supercomputer

India wants to get ahead in the technological revolution by building a new supercomputer that aims to be 61 times faster than IBM Sequoia, currently the world’s fastest which has a peak speed of 16.32 petaflops. The computer is based in Livermore, USA and consumes, nearly 7890.0 kW of electricity. According to the Top500 list, the Sequioa is one of the most energy efficient systems in the world.
Telecom and IT Minister Kapil Sibal has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sharing the roadmap to develop “petaflop and exaflop range of supercomputers” at an estimated cost of Rs 4,700 crore over 5 years. Currently India’s highest ranked supercomputer in the 2012 list is the one at CSIR Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation in Bangalore which is ranked at 58.
Hopefully this one won’t be another failed IT project and India will finally get a supercomputer in the top ten. :)

Current list of top 10 supercomputers is shown below!
