The moonlighting debate is raging in India after the tech giant Wipro fired 300 of its employees.

However the industry seems evenly divided on this question.

Demand for freelance jobs is witnessing a sudden rise as organisations are getting increasingly used to virtual workplace and remote working post the Covid-19 outbreak.

Freelance job postings and project-based work have recorded a 70-80% spike in the month of April.

The supply side has also seen a similar jump with registrations by professionals on gig platforms recording 84% jump between March and April. The sudden rush could be the result of job losses, furloughs, salary cuts pushing professionals in pursuit of additional sources of income.

Most Industry experts are, however, seeing this sudden spike not as a one-off but more as an emerging trend which is here to stay.

According to experts, this trend is in line with the paradigm shift taking place post Covid crisis. Companies are evaluating their options and revisiting their human resource strategies with a medium to long term perspective.

According to one estimate, 25-30% of the total workforce in sectors such as Internet, IT, ITES, Digital and startups will get converted into some combination of remote/freelance arrangements in the immediate future.
