Project Natick placed a sealed, submarine like data center off Scotland’s Orkney Islands in 2018. Inside were 864 servers, cooled naturally by seawater and powered through a local grid using renewable energy.

After two years underwater, Microsoft recovered the capsule and reported far fewer server failures than typical land data centers, showing the concept could work, though it remained an experiment, not a worldwide rollout.
