India’s Rooftop Solar to Double to 4 Million by 2026 under PM Surya Ghar
Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, rooftop solar has already crossed 10 lakh households and 3 GW capacity as of March 2025. The target? 4 million installations by March 2026.
🔹 State leaders emerge: Maharashtra has surpassed 1 GW, while Gujarat and UP are seeing rapid adoption, proving how local policy support accelerates national goals.
🔹 Equity in focus: The scheme provides up to 300 units of free electricity per month to eligible households adopting rooftop solar, making clean power more accessible to middle- and lower-income families.
🔹 Infrastructure challenge: With such rapid growth, grid stability and financing innovation (storage, smart meters, DISCOM participation) will be key to sustaining momentum.
This is more than an energy story, it’s about reshaping household economics, reducing subsidies on fossil-based power, and setting the foundation for India’s Net Zero 2070 vision.
👉 The big question: Will subsidy-driven adoption be enough, or do we also need stronger grid and storage infrastructure to sustain 4 million rooftop solar homes?
