⛽ India's next fuel revolution may not be electric.

It may be ethanol.

Mumbai has officially joined Delhi-NCR in retailing E85 fuel, a blend containing 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. At ₹91.18/litre, it's roughly ₹20 cheaper than regular E20 petrol in Mumbai.

But the story isn't as simple as cheaper fuel.

Recent real-world tests on flex-fuel two-wheelers showed a 24.4% drop in fuel efficiency compared to petrol. At the same time, industry bodies are proposing ₹15,000-₹20,000 retrofit kits that could allow existing BS4 and BS6 vehicles to adapt to higher ethanol blends instead of being replaced.

So what is India really trying to achieve?

🇮🇳 Lower crude oil imports
🌾 Stronger demand for agricultural feedstocks
🏭 More domestic fuel production
⚡ Greater energy security

The question now isn't whether ethanol is coming.

It's whether the economics work at scale.

In June 2019, Toyota launched the Glanza — a lightly rebadged Maruti Baleno with just a new logo and chrome grille. Dubbed a “copy-paste” car online, it still sold over 200,000 units.
Buyers were won over by Toyota’s longer 3-year/1 lakh km warranty, superior after-sales service, and brand trust — particularly in Tier-2/3 cities. The 2022 second-gen added distinct headlights, grill, and wheels, while Glanza holds stronger resale value. Rebadged Maruti models now drive ~44% of Toyota India sales.
