Attention Local Business Owners: Are your 5-star reviews actually helping you get more customers? 🚨📊
We see this all the time: A business owner is thrilled because they just got a 5-star review from a happy customer. But when we look at the review, it just says, "Great job! Nice guys."
Here is the harsh reality of Local SEO in 2026: Google's algorithm reads the text of your reviews. If you are a plumber in Chicago, Google wants to see the words "Plumbing" and "Chicago." If your reviews don't contain those words, Google doesn't boost your ranking for those searches.
But do NOT tell your customers what to write! Google's spam filters will delete reviews if they look like artificial templates.
Instead, use the "Guided Prompt Strategy": Change the text message or email you send to customers after a job. Instead of a generic link, write this:
"We are so glad you are happy with the work! If you have a minute, could you leave a review mentioning what specific service we provided and what city you live in?"
By simply asking those two questions, the customer will naturally write the exact keywords you need:
"They came out to Chicago and fixed my leaking pipes..."
This one simple tweak will feed Google's algorithm exactly what it wants, safely and authentically!
