Long before the steel mills began to hum, a blueprint was drawn on the soil of Durgapur, not just to build machines, but to build the minds that would run a nation.

On this day in 1960, a vision born from the minds of Dr. B.C. Roy and Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru materialized into what we first knew as Regional Engineering College, Durgapur. From a handful of classrooms amidst sprawling greenery to a premier Institute of National Importance, the journey of NIT Durgapur has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Whether it's navigating the maze of the Academic Block, surviving end-sems, or chasing every lead in a high-stakes quiz final, every corner of this campus tells a story of curiosity and perseverance.

Today, we look back at where it all began, and honor the vision that built our home away from home. Happy Foundation Day!

QuizInc presents the third edition of Fact or Fiction, a series that puts popular myths to the test. From science and history to pop culture, each edition examines widely believed claims and uncovers what the evidence really says. Join us as we separate fact from fiction-because the truth is often more surprising than the myth.

"The Great Wall of China is visible from space with the naked eye."

This widely accepted claim is just a fiction. Despite stretching over 21,000 km, the Great Wall is only 5 to 8 metres wide and closely blends with its surrounding landscape, making it nearly impossible to distinguish from low Earth orbit with the naked eye. This persistent myth likely originated in the 18th and 19th centuries, long before humans ventured into space. During the Apollo missions, astronaut Alan Bean noted that no man-made object is visible from the Moon with the naked eye. Although the Wall has been photographed from the International Space Station using a 180 mm telephoto lens, it is generally not visible without magnification or unaided.Sometimes, repetition is mistaken for truth. So the next time you hear an "obvious fact," pause and ask, fact or fiction?

On the 26th of July 1999, the Indian Armed Forces successfully evicted Pakistani infiltrators from their occupied positions on the high-altitude peaks of Ladakh. Battling treacherous terrain, freezing altitudes, and severe tactical disadvantages, Indian troops fought against overwhelming odds to emerge victorious.

Each year, we commemorate this triumph as Kargil Vijay Diwas. It is a moment to solemnly reflect on the immense sacrifices that secured this hard-won victory, reaffirming our commitment to honor those who surrendered their today for our tomorrow.

On this Kargil Vijay Diwas, QuizInc salutes the bravehearts who bled and laid down their lives for the motherland. Their legacy will forever stand tall.

"Humans utilise merely 10% of their celebral
capacity."
This widely accepted notion is just a fiction. Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the brain demonstrates that we utilise virtually every part of our brain, and most of it is active almost all the time. This persistent fallacy likely originated from early 20th-century neurological research or self-help misinterpretations about untapped human potential. Evolutionarily speaking, maintaining such a massive, energy-hogging organ wouldn't make sense if 90% of it sat idle. While damage to certain areas can sometimes be compensated for by other regions, neuroplasticity shows that the entire brain works dynamically to keep us functioning, thinking, and perceiving the world.

Sixty-four squares. Thirty-two pieces. A universe of infinite possibilities. Chess looks simple, but beneath the surface lies a quiet storm of strategy, foresight, and absolute focus. A battlefield where a losing position can be turned by calculated masterstrokes.

This game teaches us that every choice has a consequence, and no position is truly hopeless if one visualizes the winning path. It is the ultimate test of human intellect, reminding us that patience and deep calculation can turn the tide of any battle.

QuizInc observes International Chess Day to celebrate a game that transcends borders and generations. It stands as the ultimate arena of intellect, logic, and competitive strategy where every single move counts.

Rath Yatra, the annual chariot festival of Lord Jagannath, commemorates the ceremonial journey of the deity, accompanied by his elder brother Balabhadra and younger sister Subhadra, from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple in Puri, Odisha. Rooted in centuries of tradition, the festival symbolizes devotion, inclusivity, and the enduring bond between the deities and their devotees.
The towering wooden chariots, meticulously handcrafted each year, showcase extraordinary craftsmanship and centuries-old traditions. Pulled by thousands of devotees, they symbolize unity, equality, and collective faith. Beyond its religious significance, Rath Yatra is a remarkable confluence of mythology, history, architecture, and engineering, reflecting India's rich cultural heritage.
At QuizInc, we celebrate Rath Yatra as more than a festival. It is an opportunity to explore the stories, traditions, and history that have shaped our cultural identity. As we continue to learn and question the world around us, may this timeless celebration inspire curiosity, togetherness, and a deeper appreciation for our shared heritage.

Coelacanths are an ancient group of lobe-finned fishes whose fossil record dates back over 410 million years. They were believed to have gone extinct around 66 million years ago, making any possibility of their survival seem like fiction. That belief changed on 22 December 1938, when a living coelacanth was discovered among the catch of local fishermen off the east coast of South Africa. Today, it is regarded as one of the most remarkable rediscoveries in zoological history and a classic example of a living fossil.

Some players win matches, but only a few win hearts forever. Among those rare legends stands Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a symbol of courage, composure, and greatness. More than a cricketing icon, he is an emotion for millions. Fondly known as Captain Cool, his calm leadership, humility, and unwavering belief have inspired generations, proving that true greatness lies not only in victories but in the character with which they are achieved.

From a humble beginning in Ranchi, as a ticket collector at Kharagpur station to lifting the highest honours in world cricket, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's journey is a story of perseverance and self-belief. Under his captaincy, India won the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup, the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, making him the only captain to win all three major ICC white-ball trophies.
