Today, we celebrate the birth anniversary of Mahapurush Sri Sri Madhabdev (1489–1596), born at Letekupukhuri in present-day Lakhimpur, Assam.
A towering saint, poet, philosopher, playwright, and cultural luminary of Assam, Mahapurush Sri Sri Madhabdev made enduring contributions to Assamese literature, spirituality, and the Neo-Vaishnavite movement. He authored the timeless Naam Ghosa, composed over 150 devotional Borgeets, and created Jhumuras, a distinctive genre of short devotional plays centered on the childhood of Lord Krishna.
He established the renowned Barpeta Satra, which continues to serve as a vibrant center of faith, culture, and learning. Tradition also credits him with lighting the sacred lamp at Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar, a flame believed to have burned continuously since 1528.
Living a remarkable 107 years, Mahapurush Sri Sri Madhabdev left behind a profound spiritual, literary, and cultural legacy that continues to guide, inspire, and unite generations. His birth anniversary is observed every year on the 6th day of the Assamese month of Jeth (May–June).
