How to free up space in your Gmail account quickly

Google currently offers 15GB of free online storage for its users to save items on Google Drive, Google Photos and Gmail account as well. While this seems enough for an average user, the free space can easily cross the standard limit in case you forget to trash those redundant emails and huge mail attachments. To free up space on Gmail, you can follow these simple tips that will help disposing of those unwanted files and clear up space on your Gmail account.

The first step would be to check your Google storage summary. To do that-

1. Log in to your Google account
2. Click on the photo icon in the top right corner that will lead you to ‘My Account’
3. Tap on the My Account icon and then select Your Google Drive storage that you will find under Account preferences
4. Click on the arrow next to the line that says ‘Using _GB of 15GB ’
5. Select ‘view details’ that will give a sketch of how much space is consumed by Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos

Facebook claims that Google and Twitter also collect users’ offline data

Recently, it was revealed that data analysis firm, Cambridge Analytica and Facebook were involved in a privacy data scandal wherein the former illegally harvested up to 87 million Facebook users’ personal data without their knowledge and consent. Facebook allowed thousands of app developers to harvest data through third-party online games and quizzes.

This scandal raised concerns over users’ data privacy for which Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg had to face intensive questioning by U.S. lawmakers over the company’s collection and use of user data.

The popular social media giant has now released a detailed blog post explaining how Facebook collects information about its users from the web even if you’re not a Facebook user or are logged out of your account. The blog post that was posted by David Baser, Facebook Product Management Director on Monday said that the post is a partial response to questions Zuckerberg was unable to answer during his Senate and Congressional hearings.

Baser pointed out in the blog post that not only Facebook even companies like Google, Twitter and Amazon use many of the same user data collection practices that the social media giant does.

WhatsApp Payments gets new Request Money feature on Android beta: Here’s how it works

WhatsApp Payments on Android beta is rolling out a new feature, which will let users Request Money from their friends, contacts. The WhatsApp ‘Request Money’ feature has gone live on Android beta version of the app, and users on the regular version of Android might not see it. Android beta 2.18.113 has the feature live. We found the ‘Request Money’ option in Android beta, but not in regular Android versions of WhatsApp where the Payments feature was also active.

WhatsApp Payments is currently live in India, and the company is still beta-testing the feature. The payments feature is built on UPI, which is Unified Payments Interface, and allows for direct transfers via the bank account, provided the user has a UPI id with their bank account. UPI based payments rely on SIM verification for the feature to work, and a user needs their mobile number to be linked to their bank account. The same mobile number should be used with WhatsApp account as well, in order to allow Payments feature to work.

A New Confidential Mode is going to be introduced in Gmail

Gmail for Web will be getting a major update in the upcoming weeks with a new material design which will also introduce a new feature called ‘confidential mode’. Other features such as Quick Reply to emails and the ability to snooze email will be added. A new sidebar has been introduced that will place calendar appointments with messages in the GUI. The new confidential mode will stop the users from forwarding emails and also prevents the users from printing, downloading and copying the content from the email.

There will also be a feature that will prompt the user for a password before opening the email through two factor authentication. A user can also set an expiration date for sent emails, some of these features may seem similar to Microsoft Outlook suite. These features will help the businesses that want more control over how emails are used by the recipients.

Google Home Mini review: Big things come in small packages

The war to win the smart speaker segment is easily the hottest emerging tech battle. Although many believe Amazon is already ahead in the game with its Alexa-enabled Echo speakers range, the e-commerce giant is expecting some serious competition though, from none other than Google. The latter company is the latest entrant in the smart speaker segment, with the the Google Home and Google Home Mini in India, just a few months after Echo’s entry.

And both the smart speakers are now available in India. The Home Mini, which rivals Amazon’s Echo Dot, is the cheapest way to get the Google Assistant into your home. I have been testing Google’s Home Mini for a while now, and here’s my final verdict.

Zuckerberg flubs details of Facebook privacy commitments

Over two days of questioning in Congress, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg chief revealed that he didn’t know key details of a 2011 consent decree with the Federal Trade Commission that requires Facebook to protect user privacy.

With congressional hearings over and no immediate momentum behind calls for regulation, the biggest hammer still hanging over Facebook in the US is a fresh FTC investigation . The probe follows revelations that pro-Trump data-mining firm Cambridge Analytica acquired data from the profiles of millions of Facebook users. Facebook also faces inquiries in Europe.
The 2011 agreement bound Facebook to a 20-year privacy commitment , and any violations of that pact could cost Facebook a ton of money, even by its flush-with-cash standards. If Zuckerberg’s testimony before Congress is any indication, the company might have something to worry about.

How to verify if your Facebook data was used by Cambridge Analytica

For those unaware, Christopher Wylie, a Cambridge University researcher, had recently revealed that data analysis firm, Cambridge Analytica and Facebook were involved in a privacy scandal wherein the former illegally lifted data of millions of Facebook users’ without their knowledge and consent and used it to influence voter trends in several countries. Facebook allowed thousands of app developers to harvest data through third-party online games and quizzes and then used it to target American voters with emotionally specific messaging. Facebook believes that as many as 87 million users’ personal data have been collected without their permission.

Those who are affected by the scandal will receive a warning for using the Cambridge Analytica app, which means they are also likely to be responsible for their friends and acquaintances data being handed over to the firm, as they are a victim by proxy.

For those, who are unaffected by the event, will receive a more general message for checking apps and websites that have access to their Facebook data.

YouTube Hack Caused a Number of High-Profile Music Videos to be Defaced

Hackers have gained access to a number of high profile YouTube music channels today. The most viewed video of all time Despacito was defaced by Hackers. The thumbnail of the video was replaced with a gang holding guns, which is a scene from a Netflix TV show named Casa De Papel. The Hackers called themselves Prosox and Kuroi’sh.

Apart from Despacito a lot of other music videos also got hacked. Videos from Chris Brown, Shakira, DJ Snake, Selena Gomez, Drake, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift. While some of the videos are still available with defaced titles and thumbnail images. It is not clear whether the hackers have gained access to only individual artists Vevo accounts or if it is an entire company-wide exploit. The hackers are claiming that they used a script to change the name of the YouTube video titles.

WhatsApp Says It Collects Very Little Data as Facebook Privacy Scandal Rages On

WhatsApp has attempted to address privacy concerns surrounding its service as parent company Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica scandal continues. The world’s most popular instant messaging service, WhatsApp says it collects very little data and that every single message is end-to-end encrypted. This clarification comes as experts have claimed that the service keeps track of users' messages. There are also concerns over provisions in the WhatsApp user agreement that allow most of the wrongdoings to go unchallenged and un-remedied.

WhatsApp collects very little data and every message is end-to-end encrypted. Contrary to recent comments in the media, we are not keeping track of the friends and family you have messaged, a WhatsApp spokesperson told PTI.

"The privacy and security of our users is incredibly important to WhatsApp," the spokesperson told PTI in response to a question.

The spokesperson said invite links were an optional feature available to group administrators but it must be used only with trusted individuals.

US Army reportedly set to test AR system in 2019

The US Army is set to begin testing an AR system called HUD 3.0 sometime in 2019, according to a report in Breaking Defense.

The HUD 3.0 system reportedly consists of a helmet-mounted system that projects a range of different information onto a soldier’s field of view. The concept is based on the heads-up display currently utilised on fighter planes, which was introduced in the late 1970s.

The kind of information that would be shown to soldiers using the system would be their location in relation to the rest of their unit and their enemy. The system will be able to superimpose purely digital terrain, including potential obstacles.

The key pain points that an AR system could eliminate would be the continued reliance on physical maps and compasses in order to determine an individual’s location. A secondary benefit would be speeding up the information-gathering process, allowing soldiers to make and enact plans faster and more efficiently.

Cloudflare has introduced a DNS service that concentrates on privacy and improving the speed of web browsing

Cloudflare has launched its own custom DNS service that will help speed up users Internet and improve the privacy of the users Internet connection. The service can be utilized by going to the URL: https://1.1.1.1. Cloudflare is claiming it be the Internet’s fastest and privacy first customer DNS service. The company is also stating that it will provide more privacy over GoogleDNS and OpenDNS.

DNS services provided by the Internet Service Provider is often slow, unstable and won’t be able to handle a large amount of traffic, furthermore, ISPs can track the websites you visited which also presents privacy problems.
It’s important to note that this DNS service launched by Cloudflare isn’t going to solve all your privacy issues while experts are suggesting that it is better to use our private VPN if you the users don’t want your web activity to be tracked.

WhatsApp Android beta gets option to lock voice message recording: Here is how it works

WhatsApp’s Android beta has got a new feature, which will make life easier for users who like to send a lot of voice messages. The Android beta app will now support the option to lock voice message recording. This feature on WhatsApp which will ensure that a user does not have to continually hold mic button, while recording the message. The feature has already been rolled out to iOS users, according to reports.

WhatsApp hold/lock voice message recording on Android beta ensures that a user will not have to keep the mic button pressed down while recording. In order to lock voice message recording, after pressing on the mic symbol for recording an audio message, a user should just swipe up till the lock symbol shows on the screen. Once the lock symbol appears, it will automatically mean that the voice messaging is now locked.

The voice recording will continue in the send message bar. A user can press cancel if they not wish to share this, and it will automatically get trashed. However, if a user wants to send the voice message, they can just press on the send option, which is the green arrow box next to cancel.
