Databricks just announced Lakeflow Designer — and it might be the most important ETL announcement for data teams this year.
Here's the problem it solves:
Business analysts know the data. Data engineers build the pipelines. But their tools have always lived in separate worlds — leading to silos, painful handoffs, and pipelines that have to be rebuilt from scratch every time they need to go to production.
Lakeflow Designer changes that.
A drag-and-drop visual canvas so analysts can build pipelines without writing a single line of SQL or Python.
Genie Code — an AI assistant that generates transformations from plain English, grounded in your actual platform metadata (not generic suggestions).
Every pipeline built in Designer is a Lakeflow Declarative Pipeline under the hood — meaning engineers can review, edit, and maintain it without learning a new tool or rewriting anything.
Production-ready from day one: versioned, governed via Unity Catalog, with scheduling, alerting, and full observability built in.
The real headline isn't the no-code canvas. It's now the same thing: what analysts build and what engineers maintain. No translation layer. No rebuild.
Currently in Public Preview on AWS. Worth keeping a close eye on.
