‘Why don’t you give me some equity as an advisor’, asked a prolific ‘startup guru’ in his very first interaction with one of our founders. “What would you do for us?”, asked the founder. “Give advise!”, shot back the Guru. Obviously our founder laughed it off but I know of many who end up shelling out money or equity or both to these self-styled startup experts. Early stage entrepreneurs are vulnerable and they seek answers/direction which enabled these, so-called, experts to run their shops.
