WHAT IS AN AI PC AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM A NON-AI PC ?
- An AMD AI PC is a PC that contains an NPU (Neural Processing Unit).
- PCs without an NPU do not qualify as AMD AI PCs.
- An AI PC will run AI applications on the CPU, GPU, and/or the NPU depending on the characteristics of the task.
- All three of these components are necessary for a PC to qualify as an AI PC.
- It is important to note that many non-AI PCs are also capable of running AI workloads. These workloads may run on the CPU, on an APU’s Integrated graphics processor, or on a discrete GPU.
- The difference between an AI PC and a non-AI PC is not whether the PC can run AI, but whether the PC has an integrated, on-die AI engine. The NPU built into an AI PC gives it additional flexibility compared to a non-AI PC. The NPU will typically be used for background tasks, the integrated GPU handles on-demand AI workloads, and the CPU is used in some specific cases.
