Affective computing and HCI

Affective computing and HCI Affective computing is the study and development of systems and devices that can recognize, interpret, process, and simulate human emotions

Emotion is an important factor in human life which plays important role in daily tasks like communication, learning, decision making, cognition, perception etc. Since emotion was not easy to interoperate and hard to measure, technologists and designers have totally ignored it and often ended up with bad and frustrating design and technology. Advancement of technology enables us to understand the c

oncept of emotion and its exposure in human interaction so that we can balance affects and technology. Since the birth of computer it has seen number of developments in order to make it more users friendly and compact. It has come a long way from calculator to computer and finally took shape of smart computer. But still it lacks of emotional intelligence, response of person’s anger, frustration, happiness etc. Affective computing is a forward step in the direction of filling this gap.

Human body responds according to different circumstances and exhibits different physical changes. These changes comprises of facial expression, skin conductance, heartbeat, brain signals, body temperature, pulse rate, etc. Advancement in bio-medical technology gives us access to identify even a small change in physical parameter. For an example fear release excessive amount of sweat compare to normal condition,Happiness makes our body warm. Excitement and anticipation makes our heart rate faster. Significant changes in brain signals have been witnessed in EEG and FMRI study for different emotions. There are number of such physical changes reported in literature which bolster the era of Affective Computing. Since last one decade, this title has grabbed a wide attention from all area of science and technology around the globe. Emotion assessment was successfully done by different research community by means of different bio-medical tools like, electroencephalography (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), galvanic skin response (GSR), heart rate variability (HRV), etc. But still a lot more challenges are yet to encounter.
Stay tuned for more up comings :) :)
