These
days, when computer games keep children busy, a new breed
of edutainment-games has taken the world by storm. Here, on display, we re-introduce traditional toys that help
understand values and contribute to a child’s overall
development. This is an ancient craft, where the toys are made in wood
with sets of birds, animals, musicians, and different gods. These toys are gaily painted and are typically Indian, with a
touch of both folk and contemporary design. These wooden toys are sculpted and chiseled by artisans, and
then attractively painted with bright lacquer colors. The
wood used is mostly liptus and gullar. The paints are bright
and usually applied in primary colours. The tools are as usual
carpenter's tools --- a saw and chisel for working on the
wood. The toys include the god figures in different sizes and
pattern, contemporary hanging items of fishes, birds,
elephants and other animals, tick tock toys of animals and
birds like elephant, peacock, etc. that move their necks and
tails, sound making rattles in different designs, puzzles,
nesting dolls in different shapes and size, home utility items
with ethnic touch.
