We’ve always believed that art should have a story behind it. The internet has enough pictures already.

For NAO, the brief was to evolve the familiar without making it look like every other Asian restaurant in town. A fine line between taking inspiration and taking the obvious route.

So, we went looking for stories. In the textures, in the details, in the brothers’ travels across Asia, and in the women who were always going to be part of NAO. We just thought they deserved a little more character than the usual decorative treatment.

Of course, not every decision was unanimous. The client had their non-negotiables, we had our opinions, and a few conversations went several rounds. But that’s the thing about collaboration: sometimes the best ideas emerge somewhere between a strong opinion and a well-made argument.

And if the walls could talk, they’d tell you we put a lot of thought into what went on them.

For Narh’s Beard Oils, we looked beyond the usual visual language of men’s grooming, moving away from loud graphics and the expected tropes of masculinity.

Instead, we created a quieter, more characterful world with vintage-inspired typography, delicate line illustrations, subtle gold detailing and a restrained palette.

Each oil has its own colour, visual cues and composition, giving the range enough personality to feel distinct, while the overall system keeps everything feeling like part of the same family.

Different looks, same language. A little familiar, a little elevated and designed to make everyday beard care feel like more of a ritual.

For NAO, we played with the idea of travel - through food, architecture, and increasingly, through our phones.

The mural sits within the curved architectural bays, showing a woman mid-scroll alongside the Japanese phrase 舌で旅する -“Travel through taste.” It’s a playful take on how we discover places today - scrolling through cities, saving restaurants, travelling vicariously from our screens -while food offers a rather more tangible way to get there.

Above, woven lights inspired by Vietnamese conical hats follow the rhythm of the curved ceiling. Their layered forms bring another reference to travel into the space, while the woven surfaces filter the warm light and cast shifting shadows across the mural and textured walls.

The artwork, architecture and lighting become part of the same composition — a little journey without having to go anywhere.

From this side, NAO feels a little more relaxed. The deep green tiles set the tone, with warm timber, cane and woven textures bringing in the softness. The patterned upholstery adds a bit of playfulness to an otherwise restrained palette, while the open windows let the outside become part of the space.

We wanted the Asian influence to sit quietly in the details — in the colours, textures, artwork and little moments you notice as you move through the restaurant -rather than turning it into a theme. Familiar, layered and a little unexpected.

The alfresco at NAO takes a very different direction from the interiors - brighter, greener and a little more playful.

We used the brand green as a strong architectural move, wrapping the floor and walls in tile to create a continuous backdrop. Sculptural rattan elements sit across the ceiling, bringing in warmth, texture and a softer counterpoint to all that tile.

We wanted the space to feel green and connected to nature, but without doing the obvious tropical thing. Here, colour, material and form do the job.

Light plays a big part too. It moves through the rattan, catches the glazed tile and throws shadows across the space, so the mood shifts quite naturally through the day.

The collages are our own compositions, made from fragments of the Kapoor brothers’ travels across Asia - little pieces of their journeys folded into the larger story of NAO.
