iPhone 6 sales reach record 10 million in first weekend
22 SEPTEMBER, 2014
Today, Apple has proudly announced that it sold over 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units over the first weekend during which they were on sale.

This apparently represents a new record for first-weekend iPhone sales, according to the company itself. Though if you were hoping for a breakdown of sales between the two iPhone 6 models, you're out of luck, as Apple didn't provide more details.

It's probably safe to assume that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 massively outsold the bigger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, which would be nothing out of the ordinary. As mainstream as phablets have become already, they're still generally not better sold than more pocketable smartphones.

It's interesting to note that Apple has achieved this 10 million sales milestone despite the fact that the two new iPhones aren't officially available in China yet, nor is there currently a time frame for their release in the world's biggest smartphone market.

All the features that set smartphones apart, screen size is as close to a decider as they get. Counter to the trend of the last decade that saw cell phones become as small as technology allowed, the emergence of touchscreen and the resolution race have brought about a major shift towards the larger form factor.

The 5.2" Sony Xperia Z3, 5.5" LG G3, and the 5.7" Samsung Galaxy Note 4 have all made it clear that screen real estate is in high demand. Even Apple has to play along now - the 5.5" iPhone 6 Plus, which looked less than certain until its very premiere, is now the platform's major weapon against Android flagships.

The actual iPhone 6 that should've been the star of the show, has in a way been relegated to the role of a mini - in Android terms. A giant leap for the 4.7" iPhone (up from 4") is a small step in an industry that has long crossed the 5" mark.

Yet, size is both an asset and a liability, making the redefined compact flagship an increasingly valuable commodity. Sony were among the first to realize this and the second generation of their Xperia Z compact series will look to consolidate their leadership.

Enter the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact.

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact official shots

The industry is no stranger to more reasonably sized screens, with the likes of Samsung, HTC, and LG all offering downsized versions of their past and present flagships. Unfortunately, most of these also come with a respective reduction in specs, which is a big no-no in our books. As you know, we're huge believers in capable compact smartphones.

Key features

4.6" IPS LCD, 720 x 1280px, 319ppi, ambient light sensor
LTE connectivity
Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Xperia UI on top
IP68 certified - dust and water proof up to 1.5 meter and 30 minutes
Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset with quad-core 2.5GHz Krait 400 processor, Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM
20.7MP camera, single LED flash, 2160p video recording, dedicated hardware shutter key
2.2MP front-facing camera with 1080p video recording
16GB of built-in storage, expandable via the microSD card slot
Active noise cancellation with a secondary microphone
2,600mAh battery; STAMINA Power Saving Mode
Stylish dual glass-panel design
Main disadvantages

Non user-replaceable battery
Lacks the metal frame of the Xperia Z3
With the release of its previous Xperia Z1 Compact, Sony was able to make the first proper compact flagship that didn't sacrifice much compared to its full-sized namesake. Despite seemingly skipping a generation (i.e. no Xperia Z2 Compact), the two Compact members of Sony's Xperia family are not profoundly different from one another as they come just eight months apart.

Sony's quick release cycle should be no news by now, but the improvements to the Z3 Compact are still significant. Although it doesn't sport the metal frame of the Z3 flagship, its protruding dual glass-panel design has a unique feel all to itself. The screen diagonal has been upped to 4.6 inches from 4.3, but Sony was able to actually make the device thinner and lighter than before - a very impressive feat, especially considering they were able to increase the battery capacity to 2,600mAh as well.

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact in our studio

Initially, we were disappointed to not see a 1080p screen on the Z3 Compact spec sheet, but Sony more than makes up for it with sharp colors, a brighter display, and some vastly improved viewing angles over its predecessor. Other welcome additions include the 2160p video recording capabilities and the improved water resistance rating.

The Xperia Z3 Compact is not only a pleasure to behold but also has a markedly premium in-hand feel. Up next, we'll be taking a closer look at the design and handling, and what makes the Xperia Z3 Compact worthy of flagship status.

The Motorola Moto G was so close to perfection - beautiful design, reasonable speed and performance, excellent display, capable camera and the pure Android experience at a bargain price. And we mean the kind of price that makes any quirk or omission easily forgiven. Like limited storage or a poor camera. By throwing in LTE and a card slot, the Moto G 4G makes sure there's a lot less to forgive.

If we were to name a smartphone to get an upgrade and handpick the specs, the Moto G would've been on the shortlist. And pretty high there, too. Glad it made sense to Motorola as well.

Motorola Moto G 4G official pictures

To be fair, the Moto G was fine the way it was. Screen quality well above the pay grade, a good enough chipset, reasonable battery backup, no heavy skin. Bottom line, one of the best packages for the money just got better, with the right touches at the right places.

Key features

LTE connectivity
4.5" IPS 720p capacitive touchscreen of 329ppi, Gorilla Glass 3
Android 4.4.4 KitKat on a fast track update program
1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU; 1GB of RAM; Adreno 305 GPU; Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset
5MP camera, LED flash, 720p video capture, 1.3MP front-facing camera
8 GB of built-in memory, expandable via the newly added microSD card slot
Active noise cancellation with a dedicated microphone
2,070mAh battery
Optional battery covers
Main disadvantages

Non-user-replaceable battery
Camera could've used an upgrade too
No FullHD video recording
One thing that could've seen some extra work as well is the camera. The original Moto G's still image quality was middling at best, and the lack of 1080p video recording isn't as easy to get away with as it was last year. That said, the Moto G 4G had to stay within budget, there's no argument there.

We'll try and see whether 4G network support will take its toll on the battery life. There're a handful of smartphones, including fairly recent releases, that count on a Snapdragon 400 to power both a 720p screen and an LTE radio, so we're not expecting any unpleasant surprises.

Motorola Moto G 4G live pictures

We guess we can safely cut the introductions short. After all, it's highly unlikely that you may've missed the original Moto G. Either way, we'll be covering its 4G-enabled successor in depth. Our hardware tour begins right after the break.

The Sony Xperia M2 Aqua will give you all the water resistance you need. That's more than enough for marketing to work with, but they'll need to work hard nonetheless. You see, it's otherwise a well familiar package. So, Sony will take you to the water but will they make you drink?

Although we can safely do without expectation management, the Aqua shouldn't be construed as an upgrade. It's more of a special waterproofed edition of the regular M2, which took care of the upgrades just fine, a few months back. The Aqua will serve a small niche but, luckily, not one that's packed with competitors. The Xperia M2 Aqua has the highest water-resistance rating for a mass-market smartphone. That's something very few, besides Sonim, can match. Yes, it's that serious.

Sony Xperia M2 Aqua

And for the users who don't care about water resistance, the Xperia M2 will gladly provide the rest. We're talking the same camera, chipset, screen and battery - in a package that's virtually the same size. With the regular M2 eligible for a KitKat upgrade, and already getting it in certain places, the water resistance is the only notable change by way of specs. Here they go anyway.

Key features

4.8" IPS LCD, 540 x 960px, 229ppi, Gorilla Glass 3, ambient light sensor
LTE connectivity
Android 4.4.2 KitKat with Xperia UI on top
IP68 certified - dust and water proof up to 1.5 meter and 30 minutes
Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset with quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 processor, Adreno 305 GPU and 1GB of RAM
8MP camera, single LED flash, 1080p video recording, dedicated hardware shutter key
VGA front-facing camera with video recording
8GB of built-in storage, expandable via the microSD card slot
Active noise cancellation with a secondary microphone
2,300mAh battery; STAMINA Power Saving Mode
Main disadvantages

Low screen resolution for the size
Non user-replaceable battery
3.5mm headphone jack has a flap (unlike most other waterproof phones)
Snapdragon 400 is a popular choice with this generation of Sony midrangers and that makes sense - it's what the competition's been doing for a while now. A Snapdragon 400 and a qHD screen are last season's minis' specs - to be on the safe side, Sony should price the Aqua comfortably below the new crop, which boast HD screens.

In fact, some rivals manage a 720p screen with a Snapdragon 400 chipset. What if Sony wasn't busy plugging the Xperia M2's holes and went for a higher screen resolution? Maybe they thought they had enough supply of those in the T2 phablet, the C3 and the T3, the still relevant SP.

Sony Xperia M2 Aqua at HQ

Anyway, we cannot judge a device solely on specs, especially with the price tag still unknown. Let's get busy testing and see if the original Xperia M2 just got more outdoorsy or there's more to it than we can see on the surface.

Welcome to our Gadget magazine. The smart phone market is growing day by day and coming with high end futuristic technology. Mobile giant HTC has launched its newest android phone “The J Butterfly” Exclusively on KDDI which is a Japanese telecom company.

Unfortunately, there is noupdates from both HTC and KDDI whether the phone will be released outside Japan or not. The “HTC J Butterfly” runs on Android version 4.4 (KitKat), but no further updates are given on the phones single or dual sim capabilities.
According to latest gadgets news, the phone has a 5 inch full hd display and is a waterproof device which is the main feature of this device. The J Butterfly comes with 32GB of inbuilt memory and also with expandable storage with the help of a micro SD card up to 128GB.

This feature can also be considered a selling factor as most high end smart phones don’t have external storage capacity which is very important. The camera is a 13megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash and also has a 5 megapixel front facing camera for video calling. The HTC J Butterfly also has the dual rear camera setup.
KDDI has called the rear setup feature as “Duo Effect” camera in the press statement. The phone will be available in Rouge, Canvas and Indigo as colour options. The phone has Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS/ A-GPS, GPRS/ EDGE and 3G connectivity options and also has 4G facility.
It comes with a 2700mAh battery, weighs 156 grams, and has dimensions of 145x70x10mm. The HTC J Butterfly supports HTC’s much touted Dot View Case. So considering the features of much hyped HTC M8, this phone also provides the same and looks different but as released only in Japan, the customers outside Japan may have to wait a little longer for this device.

Apple iphone 6 set for release on Sept 9th
Posted 34 days agoby Parul Khare
Welcome to our gadgets magazine where you will get all the latest gadget news from around the globe. A good news for fans of Apple and those who are waiting for the new iphone 6. According to a technology website called Recode which has a proven record of accurately predicting Apple’s product launch schedules, Apple will announce the release of iphone 6 on September 9th 2014.

Apple is holding a media event to launch the next version of the iphone that it the iphone 6 on September 9th. Apple is likely to launch the iPhone 6 which will certainly have a bigger screen, possibly a screen size of 4.7 inch. Though it is still not clear that the company will follow the pattern which it set last year with the models, iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C and launch two version of the device that will be one cheaper and one flagship version.

The iPhone 5C, which has a plastic body and is cheaper compared to the premium iPhone 5S, hasn’t done well in the market. But consumers who wanted to get an iPhone mostly go for the iPhone 5S not the iPhone 5 C. Because of that Apple may not go for the C version of the device this year as sales of the iphone 5 c were lower than expected.
But instead this time, there are strong very indications by the company that Apple will launch two models of the iPhone that will have different screen sizes in a race to compete against the normal size phones like Nexus 5 as well as phablet devices that have screen size of 5 inch or more.
Phablet devices have proven popular in developing markets like China and India and with a bigger iPhone, Apple may try to attract consumers who like big screen size devices. The iPhone 6 is expected to go on sale a few weeks after the announcement on September 9. Along with the bigger screen size, the phone will have a new processor, better camera and more amount of storage and RAM.
