IBM-Apple partnership beats year-end deadline for 100th enterprise app:-

When IBM and Apple forged their partnership last year to bring new mobile apps to the corporate world, their promise of bringing 100 such apps to market by the end of 2015 was widely considered an ambitious goal. Sure enough, though, it now looks like they've hit their target right on schedule.

IBM has delivered more than 100 IBM MobileFirst for iOS apps through the partnership, it announced Wednesday, each combining its big-data and analytics capabilities with Apple's user experience.

The apps released so far span 14 industries and 65 professions, including consumer products, automotive, financial services, retail, healthcare, travel and transportation, and chemicals and petroleum. Forty-eight brand-new apps have made their debut this month.

"Today's announcement proves that IBM and Apple are successfully driving their partnership forward," said Charles King, principal analyst with Pund-IT.

Not only have the companies surpassed their 100-app goal, but "what is also notable is the sheer variety of business cases those solutions cover," King added. "I expect that development pace to continue or even accelerate as IBM and Apple continue to collaborate, and MobileFirst developers gain further experience."

Many future apps in the MobileFirst for iOS series will incorporate the cognitive capabilities of Watson, IBM said, enabling them to continuously learn about the needs of employees and customers over time.

IBM is also now working on enterprise apps for the iPad Pro that take advantage of the device’s expanded power, performance and larger screen size along with iOS 9's multitasking features to allow professionals to work in two apps side-by-side at the same time, it said. Apps with support for Apple Pencil, meanwhile, will offer new precision and functionality for tasks such as logging transactions or annotating maintenance logs.

Overall, the result should be good news for corporate users, particularly those who recognize how discrete, task-specific apps can enhance worker and organizational efficiencies, King said.

Looking ahead, the success of the IBM-Apple partnership has also "thrown down a gauntlet of sorts to competitors" in the mobile business computing space, King suggested. "IBM and Apple certainly aren't alone in their ambitions for this market, but this announcement suggests that the pair are setting a pace that other vendors may find difficult to emulate, let alone surpass."

Juniper warns about spy code in firewalls:-

Juniper, a major manufacturer of networking equipment, said on Thursday it found spying code planted in certain models of its firewalls, an alarming discovery that echoes of state-sponsored tampering.

The affected products are those running ScreenOS, one of Juniper's operating systems that runs on a range of appliances that act as firewalls and enable VPNs. ScreenOS versions 6.2.0r15 through 6.2.0r18 and 6.3.0r12 through 6.3.0r20 are vulnerable, according to an advisory.

The unauthorized code was found during a recent internal review, wrote Bob Worrall, Juniper's chief information officer. He did not indicate where Juniper thinks the code originated.

Juniper has released critical patches to fix the problems.

"At this time, we have not received any reports of these vulnerabilities being exploited; however, we strongly recommend that customers update their systems and apply the patched releases with the highest priority," Worrell wrote.

The internal review uncovered two problems. One could allow remote administrative access to a ScreenOS device over telnet or SSH.

Although log files would reflect a login attempt, "a skilled attacker would likely remove these entries from the log file, thus effectively eliminating any reliable signature that the device had been compromised," Juniper wrote.

The second vulnerability can allow an attacker who can monitor VPN traffic to decrypt it. VPNs are encrypted connections between a user and another computer and are often used by companies to allow secure remote access to their systems for employees who are traveling.

Disturbingly, Juniper wrote that "there is no way to detect that this vulnerability was exploited."

The earliest affected version of ScreenOS, 6.2.0r15, appears to have been released in September 2012, according to documentation.

That suggests attackers may have had access to corporate firewalls and VPN connections for a long time if Juniper was compromised at that time. Firewalls are rich targets for cyberattackers since the devices monitor all data traffic flowing in and out of an organization.

The compromise of such a prominent vendor with code specifically designed for spying echoes operations by the NSA described in documents leaked in 2013 by former contractor Edward Snowden.

A December 2013 story in the German publication Der Spiegel described a 50-page catalog of hardware and software tools used by the NSA to infiltrate the equipment, including one targeted at Juniper's NetScreen appliances.

The document describes a technique nicknamed FEEDTROUGH, which is used to keep two kinds of software implants on a Juniper NetScreen firewall. The technique is aimed at keeping the software implants on the device even if it reboots or is upgraded.

The NSA also targeted other major networking manufacturers, including Cisco and Huawei, Der Spiegel reported.

India ranked 6th in source of world's spam

Kaspersky Lab Experts, who recently published a report on spam monitoring for the 3rd Quarter, 2014, have said that in Q3, the launch of iPhone 6, along with the Ice Bucket Challenge initiative, were the two main topics that spammers used to promote junk mails.

The report's main findings on spam and phishing in Q3 said that the US (14% of spam), Russia (6.1%) and Vietnam (6%) were the three biggest sources of spam in Q3. India ranked 6th in source of world's spam, sending almost 3.43% of unwanted mail.

The report said that phishing that targeted online financial services accounted for 38.23% of all detections registered by Kaspersky Lab products. Phishing against banks showed the highest growth rate in the financial category. Kaspersky Lab experts saw several instances where a rapid increase in Apple-related phishing detections could be linked to the launch of new products.

"Fraudsters also actively reacted to the news of celebs being hacked online, a story that reportedly involved Apple cloud services being compromised. Interestingly, this is very typical behavior for fraudsters. Last year Kaspersky Lab experts registered an increase in detections on product launch dates," the report said.

Altaf Halde, Managing Director, Kaspersky Lab - South Asia said, "Spammers are becoming more intelligent in masking their messages under the garb of offering something genuine to the recipients - be it offering iPhone 6 or offerings to conduct marketing campaign that will develop business and attract new clients. Once unsuspecting users have clicked or downloaded the email attachment, Trojans are downloaded without the user's knowledge, which are capable of stealing data or even holding the data at ransom (encrypting the data and demanding money to decrypt the data, like CryptoLocker). Internet users in India should start taking their digital security seriously. With the number of threat vectors increasing alarmingly along with the rise of cybercriminal activities, it is imperative that Internet users in India protect themselves with genuine Internet Security or Anti-Virus software. With regards to spam, we now expect to see a sharp rise in the percentage of spam dedicated to Christmas and New Year festivities until it reaches its December peak."

Windows 2003 Server Support Ends:

As Windows server 2003 draws back its support in July 2015, Indian CIOs elaborate on how they plan to cope up with the situation.

Microsoft had long announced that their support for Windows server 2003 will end on July 2015. Now that the time is closing upon the tech industry, the need to have a plan in place so as to prevent panic and chaos in the IT department becomes extremely essential.
“We run our business-critical applications on Microsoft, be it end-point, like laptops and desktops, or servers. We knew this was about to happen, so six months back we started migrating. We have upgraded everything everywhere,” said Sanjeev Kumar, group CIO and president-business excellence, Adhunik Group of Industries.
G.S. Rao, CIO, KSK Energy Ventures, was also in line with the news. “Because we are in an enterprise agreement with Microsoft, we have already planned the migration. Every year we have a plan chalked out for all our companies. We had migrated to Windows 2008 in 2012 itself,” he said.
It seems like Indian CIOs are up to date and aptly foresighted when it comes to server migration. Similar to Kumar and Rao, Dhiren Savla, global CIO, VFS Global Group, also made it a point to save his enterprise from any last minute trouble.
“We started the migration exercise well in advance, and most of our servers have already migrated. The few servers that are pending have extended support enabled, which is valid up to July 2015,” said Savla.
However, the challenge that now arises due to such an announcement is that how does a CIO budget his server migration. Some CIOs have their migration already covered while others have kept a separate budget for the same.
“Since using the latest technology is core to our business, we have been enterprise customers for Microsoft. Under our agreement, we are covered for all upgrades, so any kind of an additional budget is not required,” Savla said.
Rao from KSK Energy Ventures said, “To budget this we have roped in a major chunk from our highest volumes of production. One-third of the production budget has been kept for migration,” said Rao.
Though Indian CIOs seem well-equipped as far as server migrations are concerned, it is important to note that since all software services are perishable, a plan-B always comes in handy to tackle any unexpected situations.
“As we know most of the software products have a limited life cycle, a yearly plan prepared well in advance will help protect one’s investments. This will prevent panic in such cases of sudden announcements,” said Kumar.

AT&T offers secure links to IBM SoftLayer cloud:

IBM and AT&T are teaming up to stay competitive in the cloud market, announcing a deal that would let customers link their IT services to IBM SoftLayer cloud using AT&T NetBond secure virtual private network (VPN).

The dual service offering would give customers a method for securely connecting their data and IT systems to a set of SoftLayer managed hosting and hybrid cloud services.

Linking together the IBM and AT&T network technologies would help organizations customize their own hybrid cloud computing applications. It also automatically allocates VPN bandwidth, allowing customers to use as much or as little as they need.

“AT&T NetBond gives customers a broader range of options as they explore how to best leverage a hybrid cloud,” said Jim Comfort, general manager of IBM Cloud Services. Customers could move workloads to the SoftLayer cloud “as if were part of their local-area network,” he added.

AT&T offered three other selling points for the service:

NetBond works with existing AT&T VPN services through APIs, creating an automated network service that frees customers from the need to directly manage access lines and other equipment.
NetBond “automatically flexes” with the needs of the cloud service, enabling customers savings of 60 percent on networking costs.
The VPN technology also isolates traffic going directly to cloud platforms using the AT&T private global network, thus providing more protections from distributed denial of service attacks.

Jon Summers, senior vice president growth platforms at AT&T said the two companies were “making the network as flexible as the cloud and giving enterprises confidence they can migrate their business systems to the cloud and still meet their security, scalability and performance requirements.”

The companies expect these capabilities to be available in first quarter of 2015.

IBM acquired SoftLayer in late 2014 then made a $1 billion commitment broaden its cloud portfolio by adding 27 new data centers to SoftLayer’s existing 13.
