Oracle Launches Oracle Database 12C

Oracle, which enjoys a 67 percent market leadership in the database market globally, is eyeing newer opportunities for its latest offering in database solutions—Oracle Database 12c, which the company claims is the first database designed for the cloud.

The Oracle Database 12c has a multitenant architecture that consolidates databases onto the cloud; without the need to change applications.

Oracle Database 12c introduces 500 additional features and can benefit customers deploying private database clouds and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) vendors looking for a multitenant model.

“Oracle multitenant works with all Oracle database features, including real application clusters, partitioning, data guard, compression, automatic storage management, real application testing, transparent data encryption, database vault, etc,” informed Niraj Kaushik, VP, Alliances & Channels, Oracle.

The company introduced automatic data optimization features that automatically balances and optimizes performance with maximum storage footprint reduction using the data compression available on Oracle storage systems with Hybrid Columnar Compression (HCC).

It also announced new database-to-storage system capabilities for customers using Oracle Database 12c with its Sun ZFS storage appliance and Pillar Axiom storage systems. These are the only NAS and SAN storage that support Oracle Hybrid Columnar Compression, an Oracle Database-specific feature that compresses historical data by 12x, and improves query performance an average of 5x.

According to Kaushik, “The extended support for 10G R2 database expired in July 2013, and the 11G R2 is the only version currently available for premier support. Therefore 12c is the next best thing for the next 8-10 years. The opportunities for partners are numerous, especially in services as they can help customers to pen a migration plan, architect it and do the implementation. I believe that most of our customers would migrate onto the new database in the next 1-2 years.”

Matt Cutts on Multiple Domain Names: Avoid Massive Cross-Linking Schemes:

The latest Google Webmaster Help video featuring Distinguished Engineer Matt Cutts brings up the topic of the proper way to handle multiple domains. Should you be linking them altogether?

In the past, it was quite common to see a website linked to 20 or 30 different related websites. But in a lot of those situations, the sites were pretty spammy. And this is the one caveat that Cutts brings up in the video.

Cutts said if you have multiple sites you want to link together you need to have a very good reason to be linking them together, otherwise it will come across as being spammy. Why do you have 20 domain names that you feel should be all cross-linked?

Cutts said about the only situation where this kind of solution is viable is if you're linking multiple country site for the same company together. But even then, he suggested that you do it in a way that won't come across as spamming. This means instead of having 30 footer links to all the different locations, find a smarter way to do this.

"If you have 20 domain names and they’re all versions of the domain in different countries, such as Google.co.za, Google.fr, it can make a lot of sense to be able to get from one version of the domain to a different version. But even then I probably wouldn’t link all the domains all in the footer all by themselves because that’s a little bit strange," Cutts said.

"I’d probably have one link to a country locator page, which might even be on the main .com, that might have flags or something like that so there are ways to get to those other domains. And as long as there is a good way for users to get there than search engines will be of the follow those links as well. Just make sure their normal static HTML and we will be able to follow them and PageRank will be able to flow."

Having multiple country domains is about the only reason why someone would link to multiple sites in a footer legitimately, according to Cutts.

He brings up cases where blog networks were linking other blogs together. He has seen networks that have large links to multiple unrelated blogs. But generally, you should try to keep everything within the same domain to prevent mass cross-linking, and prevent any massive cross-linking schemes between sites, unless it is something like the location issue.

What you 'delete' on your computer system is never really deleted at all
Once a file has been deleted, it never really disappears from the system and in fact can still be accessed.

If a file is moved to the trash, it doesn’t mean it has actually been deleted and even when the trash is emptied, the space inhabited by the file isn’t actually emptied, News.com.au reports.

According to the report, when a file is ‘deleted’ from the system and then from the trash, it is simply marked ‘empty’.

Michael from YouTube channel VSauce explained the process and said that the file's home becomes available real estate but the file itself hasn't actually moved out and only the pointers have gone away.

The report said that pointers are a kind of data that point to places in a computer's memory where the file a user is referencing can be found, and therefore ‘overwriting’ the file is needed to make it unrecognizable.

However, even overwriting at times doesn’t work as there have been instances where hackers were able to put back the information together even after the file was overwritten for more than 35 times.

So eventually there is nothing that is permanently deleted and the best way to keep the data safe is to keep the hard drives of your old computers before ditching, donating or selling it, the report added.
