If you sense that your Laptop or PC is Slow ? Almost all engineers would ask you to defragment your hard drive. Know your device, before you start to defragment.
Why Defragment my drive ?
With age, data grows in your hard drive. Every time you want to open a boot-up, search for an application or a file, the hard drive has to search harder from all the information to find and get the application or file that you want to open. Slow boot-up, random blue screen, PC freeze and sometimes..does not boot up ?
By defragmenting the hard drive, the data spread across in different places are brought together to access the application or file a little faster. Defragment to improve performance...

1. Which OS and how to defragment...
2. Hard-drives and defragmentation..do's and don'ts...
1. Windows-based systems require periodic defragmentation. UNIX and Linux-based systems do not, because of a different design for storing data, even if the same hardware is used. Microsoft Windows provides a proprietary defragmenting tool within its OS. Third-party versions also are available.
• Microsoft Windows 98 contains a built-in defragmentation tool available via the system’s Tools menu.
• Microsoft Windows NT was released without a defragmenter tool because its new technology file system (NTFS) was designed for automatic system defragmentation. However, third-party defragmentation tools are often used.
• Microsoft Windows 2000 is equipped with defragmentation tools, which are more efficient than those found in earlier Windows operating systems.
• Microsoft Windows XP and Windows 7 contain default disk defragmentation tools.
2. Emptying your recycle bin, browser cache and other temporary folders right before defragmentation is essential.
Large files that are broken up into large fragments generally don't need to be defragged. Defragmenting certain files may have zero effect on performance, so processing them is not only a waste of time and effort, but may also shorten the hard drive's lifespan through excessive writing.
Defragmenting Solid State Drives (SSD's) is a tricky situation and does not lead to any performance improvement: it can even reduce the life expectancy of an SSD. Defragmenting SSDs is not only unnecessary but can substantially reduce their life expectancy.
